General
Resources and Personal Web Sites
- The Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers (modeling
2-ft gauge railways on 0 gauge track) has a nice web site at http://www.16mmngmodellers.org.uk/.
The page has information about the group, as well as photos, an events
calendar, and information about their outstanding publication, 16mm
Today.
- David Cole has set up an internet mailing list for
small-scale live steam. This is one of those groups that you
send e-mail to, and it is redirected to everyone on the list.
Sort
of a "chat room", in slow motion. The discussions have been
lively
and informative since it started, and the participants represent a
broad range of steam modelers from all over the world. Sign up,
or miss the fun! To get onto the list, send e-mail to
sslivesteam-on@colegroup.com. You'll get a confirmation message;
just hit "reply" on your mail application and it will finalize your
sign-up.
- The Live Steaming Web
page features items of interest to live steamers in all scales:
coming
events, technical articles, buy and sell bulletin board, and pointers
to
many other steam-related sites.
- There is a mailing-list discussion group for
live steam topics. To get on the list, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/livesteam/
and follow the instructions.
- Metal Web
News has articles and resources for metalworkers.
- The Model
Engineer Support Page has project photos, plans and drawings, tips
and techniques for the model engineer. (Archived, but no longer live.)
- The Bay Area GRS
has a very active live steam group. The BAGRS Live Steamers have
monthly
operating sessions, and are working on a project loco which novices
will
truly be able to build. Their meetings are documented in the on-line
version of Steam in the Garden.
- In addition to rec.models.railroad,
the Usenet group rec.crafts.metalworking
has many live steamers who read and contribute. Often a question on the
topic could go equally well in either group. If you have live steam
questions, or wish to start doing metalworking (machining, sheetmetal,
soldering and welding) in your railroad modeling, you may wish to look
in on that group, too.
- Dave
Watkins Live Steam Page has photos of the live steamers he has
built,
as well as photos of and a construction article about his
gas/mechanical-powered loco "Detritus".
This is a must-read for those of you who still have to electrify your
tracks for those "other" locomotives.
- Another nicely done UK site is Paul Backhouse's On Track in the Garden. Paul
models in SM32 scale (16mm/ft scale, 32mm 0 gauge track).
- Data for builders, kitbuilders, and model engineers: Rick
Blanchard has compiled an invaluable body of information on prototype
dimensions and practices on his site, da Trains. If
you're building a locomotive, rolling stock, or operational equipment,
you're likely to find the dimensions or standards that describe it,
along with scale conversion tables for every scale from N to 1:20.
- Gerd Karl's Dampf
Modell Bahn site tells what's up in small-scale steam in Germany
(in
German and English).
- Henk Bunte has put together an interesting diary, including
measured drawings, about scratchbuilding a coal-fired gauge 1
locomotive
on his Modelbouwatelier
(Model Building Studio) site.
- The Houston (Texas) Small Scale Live Steamers is an active group
with regular get-together days. Their HSSLS web page reports on
recent run days and gives future dates. The group includes live
steamers from all over central and east Texas -- check them out.
- MyLargeScale.com now
has a very active live steam discussion area.
