Notes on spam filtering.

All mail incoming to NMIA is rated for spam. There is a special header added to all messages called the 'X-Spam-Level' header which is followed by a ':' and a series of Q's. The more Q's the header contains, the more likely it is that the message is spam. When creating a filter in you mail client program, make sure you do not have a space between 'X-Spam-Level' and ':'. However, there should be one, and only one, space between the ':' and the Q's.

NMIA would suggest you start with 5 Q's. By changing the number of Q's in your spam filter, you change the effectiveness of you filter. It is wise to create a folder for your spam, so you can review what has been filtered, in case you miss a message you need. After reviewing your spam folder you can decide whether you want to add more Q's to decrease the amount of email filtered, or remove Q's to increase the amount of email filtered.
