      The Turnings of Yearnings (and vice-versa)

   profligate waste and conspicuous consumption
   seem unlikely candidates for material redemption
   and yet it would seem
   that the american dream
   must seek solace in this madness
   to escape the growing sadness
   of ideology led astray
   from the haunts of yesterday
   the "will be that was"
   that never quite does
   what it's supposed to as advertised
   with ultimate hype it's aggrandized
   as the be-all-end-all solution
   for those who do the ablution
   with their wallets opened wide
   to the relentless "supply-side"
   that "creates" worthless wealth
   to the detriment of our health
   while the kids are out raving
   to satisfy their craving
   for those many experiences of life
   that come with premeditated strife
   if they wind up killing each other
   well, now, it doesn't really matter
   there's plenty more where they came from
   and they know it 'cause they ain't dumb
   but the tide of public opinion can't change
   the broad scope of false premises' range
   "democracy" as it's practiced here
   is tortured by the constant fear
   that someone actually does something
   to rock some boats and dare to sing
   a song that casts all sins
   all conceits to the winds
   of time blowing humankind ever forward
   into the myriad futures past untoward
   so around and around we go we go
   where we stop, do we care to know?
