Be a part of history… Join us April 21-April 29, 2007, as we enter our 6th year of retracing and riding Billy the Kid’s travels after his infamous escape from the Lincoln County jail in April 28th,1881. Share the adventure of the New Mexico landscape, experiencing over 125 miles of mountains, desert plains, and the Pecos River country. Ranchers along the way will host us, just as they did during Billy’s ride to Fort Sumner.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
As I Knew Them:
Reminiscences of John P. Meadows.
Tularosa mayor and saloon owner. Army
guide. Cowpuncher. Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett’s deputy. In his 82-year
life John P. Meadows wore those hats.
The years between his 1854 birth and 1936 death were dominant in New Mexico
history and politics. Many famous names including Billy the Kid, moved through
the era and area, and between 1880 and 1898 Meadows frequently crossed their
paths.

The court hearing to exhume Billy the Kid was dismissed this morning, Sept. 24, 2004, with prejudice by both the lawyer chosen by Gov. Richardson to represent Billy and the Sheriffs doing the investigation. Other parts of the investigation will continue but the need to dig up Billy the kid's grave is no longer an issue.

Showdown in the county seat
By Dianne Stallings/Ruidoso News
SEPT. 21, 2004
Shouting and pounding the podium, Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Sullivan
attempted unsuccessful Tuesday to drown out questions from County
Commissioner Leo Martinez over his publicity-generating investigation of two
123-year-old murders.
Like old West gunfighters, the two exchanged verbal pot shots at the
commission meeting, allowing a long-standing animosity between them to fuel
a debate over the merits and possible legal problems associated with
investigation into the deaths of two lawmen, supposedly from bullets fired
by the outlaw Billy the Kid.
