Bill Richardson, the Governor of New Mexico (pictured in the foreground) back in the saddle for this year's upcoming Billy the Kid Trail Ride.  The trail riders will be honorary Billy the Kid Outlaw Gang members for the duration of the ride and deputized "Regulators". Those who finish the complete 125 miles will get a full year membership in the Outlaw Gang.

Be a part of history  Join us April 21-April 29, 2007,  as we enter our 6th year of retracing and riding Billy the Kid’s travels after his infamous escape from the Lincoln County jail in April 28th,1881.  Share the adventure of the New Mexico landscape, experiencing over 125 miles of mountains, desert plains, and the Pecos River country. Ranchers along the way will host us, just as they did during Billy’s ride to Fort Sumner.

Tularosa mayor and saloon owner. Army guide. Cowpuncher. Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett’s deputy. In his 82-year life John P. Meadows wore those hats.

The years between his 1854 birth and 1936 death were dominant in New Mexico history and politics. Many famous names including Billy the Kid, moved through the era and area, and between 1880 and 1898 Meadows frequently crossed their paths.

The court hearing to exhume Billy the Kid was dismissed this morning, Sept. 24, 2004, with prejudice by both the lawyer chosen by Gov. Richardson to represent Billy and the Sheriffs doing the investigation. Other parts of the investigation will continue but the need to dig up Billy  the kid's grave is no longer an issue.

Shouting and pounding the podium, Lincoln County Sheriff Tom Sullivan attempted unsuccessful Tuesday to drown out questions from County Commissioner Leo Martinez over his publicity-generating investigation of two 123-year-old murders.

Like old West gunfighters, the two exchanged verbal pot shots at the commission meeting, allowing a long-standing animosity between them to fuel a debate over the merits and possible legal problems associated with investigation into the deaths of two lawmen, supposedly from bullets fired by the outlaw Billy the Kid. Billy the Kid Investigation hearing to be held at the DeBaca County Courthouse Sept. 27, 2004 at 1:30PM, Judge Hartley presiding. Joe Micalizzi the BTKOG webmaster and Jan Girand the new editor for the BTKOG Gazette will be in attendance in Ft. Sumner to report on the results of the hearing.

There will be a special meeting at 7PM at the Service Center in the Courthouse  Annex (back of the courthouse) on the same day. Folks interested in Billy the Kid and what can be done to positively promote Ft. Sumner are invited. A short film that features the "Last Trail of Billy the Kid" will also be shown. Village folks in attendance will get to see and vote (thumbs up or down) on a controversial picture (BTKOG webmaster voluntarily removed it from the picture page) that was taken at the end of the trail ride. Should it be posted or not on the internet. Got your attention...attend the meeting!
