As part of our mission statement, we are adding an elementary school educational component to the 2005 Trail of Billy’s Last Ride. Through a field trip to Lincoln and a two week lesson plan, students from a local 4th grade class will have the opportunity to experience the trail ride through the journal writing of our riders. We are looking for riders who would be interested in participating in this educational component of our new school program.
All lessons and activities will meet the New Mexico Standards and Benchmarks. The students will incorporate Reading, Writing, History, Geography, Science and Math.
Riders would be required to make descriptive journal entries on a daily basis to reflect the following, but not limited to: what they saw and experienced along the trail, i.e., the terrain, vegetation, weather conditions, how their horse was doing, the hardship, heartache, and/or joy of traveling by horseback, taking care of their horse, plus personal observations and interactions.
This journal will be given to the students at the end of the ride. The class will use the journals to create a book(s) of interpretive pictures and stories that will be distributed to the Hubbard Museum of the America West, the class, and REDETT (Rural Economic Development Through Tourism).
