After the passing of his father, Chief Moytoy, Oconostota succeeded him as Chief of the Cherokees in 1737. Info. taken from "Nancy Ward" 'Beautiful Woman of Two Worlds' by: Robert G . Adams.
Oconostota resigned as War Chief in 1782. The Chota Treaty that was his last public appearance at a White-Indian council. Old and nearly blind, he, along with Nancy Ward and other members of the family, spent the winter of 1782-83 in the home of Joseph Martin on Long Island (Kingsport). In the spring, feeling the end near, he asked Martin to take him back to his beloved Chota. There his was buried with Christian rites in a canoe coffin.
