(Karen S. Rex to L. Ellingham, 13-I-2004): "[father's] 1767/68 records are Longswamp Twp., Berks Co.'; 1815/1816: 150 acre farm, Wythe Co., VA; Winifred Hunt: "died at son Thos. "at great age"; (from Mary Kegley, letter 21 Sep 1992 to Lewis Ellingham): 'The John and wife Susannah deed in 1816 shows the land was located on the north side of Lick Mountain, which places him in what is now Wythe County. Joseph Montgomery was also associated with what is now Wythe County and he was the purchaser of the land. This ties in with the 1815 tax list, showing John Acre with a farm on the road leading from Evans Ferry to Wythe C. H. (courthouse) on the north side of Lick Mountain. This location would place the land in the vicinity of the Danner Road [shown on the map you (L.E.) sent]. Route 52 is the Ferry road and the old road did not go to Fort Chiswell as on the present map but through a gap in Lick Mountain to connect with the Great Road further west (the Great Road is roughly Route 11 and I-81).'; Mary Kegley to L. Ellingham [17-II-2004]: "The first tract [John Aker's], as you probably realized, is the land grant for the survey you also cited. The names mentioned were Robert Cranston and Peter Bishop. The Michael Aker property is in the same general vicinity as the John Aker property. The Cranston place was near the State Police Headquarters on Route 11 (now service road) and his land went to the Kents who owned a large place north of the police headquarters. The Bishops lived on the road leading from Evans Ferry to Wythe Court House, same as John Aker. [129540] Pinhook may have been just across the state line inVirginia. or possibly right on the state line. John Boggus was a local merchant and the Postmaster. John was a dyed in the wool Republican and the champion checker player of Ashe, Co., NC
[129537] He was born near Pinhook, located on the state line of Grayson County, Virginia and Ashe County, North Carolina. Pinhook a was community center about 5 miles east of the corner where Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee meet. Wiley's father died while Wiley was very young. By the time he was 12, in 1893, Wiley was in Maybuery, McDowell Co. WV. Wiley spelled the name Mayberry in his book, "The Autobiography of a Handicapped Rebel". The fact that Wiley ended up in Maybuery and that Joseph soon took his family there also may provide some hint of where Wiley's grandfather and Joseph's father, Thomas Jefferson had some roots. The man Wiley referred to as "Uncle Jake", who he describes as a "copper colored, old, bald slave Negro from Virginia" was thought by Wiley to "have known my people". Wiley said Uncle Jake was a hard-shelled Baptist preacher who "profoundly influenced my entire life".
[129543] He went to Cuba in November as a clean up force after the surrender of Spain during the Spanish American War. He returned to Savannah, Georgia to be mustered out of the service in May 5, 1899.
