Mary Kegley to L. Ellingham [17-II-2004]: "The first tract [John Aker's], as you probably realized, is the land grant for the survey you also cited. The names mentioned were Robert Cranston and Peter Bishop. The Michael Aker property is in the same general vicinity as the John Aker property. The Cranston place was near the State Police Headquarters on Route 11 (now service road) and his land went to the Kents who owned a large place north of the police headquarters. The Bishops lived on the road leading from Evans Ferry to Wythe Court House, same as John Aker. See Early Adventurers, Volume 3.' for 2nd marriage of Michael Aker (I):

Diane Berry (diane.rg@gmail.com) (subject: Michael Aker & Rebecca Arnold Research) [December 15, 2007] to: L. Ellingham (magicpool@earthlink.net): 'I am helping a descendant of Michael Aker and Rebecca Arnold with her family history. I've been doing research on this family and came across your posts as well as several others at genealogy.com. I think that Michael Aker may have been the son of Michael Aker and Catherine, possibly Hepner, of your family line. (I ruled out Philip Aker Senior's clan due to the fact that there were no young male sons in 1810 that would fit Michael's birth date of 1805.)
I have several Wythe County tax lists and it is very clear that there were two distinct Aker families. I also have an early settlement map which provides additional proof. According to the tax lists, Philip Aker Senior's family did indeed live in the part of Wythe County that became Smyth County. In 1801 through 1816, there were two other Aker families, John Aker and Michael Aker, who lived in the part of the county closer to Fort Chiswell. (I'm assuming that this was your John) Interestingly, Henry Arnold, the father of Rebecca Arnold lived in the same area as John and Michael and was listed in the tax lists as early as 1794. John and Michael weren't listed until 1801. As you mentioned in one of your posts, John Aker was in Wythe County until about 1816. However, Michael continued to be listed in the tax lists. The last one I have is for 1830 and this list has a Michael Sr. and a Michael Jr. (Not to be confused with Philip Aker Sr.'s son, Michael who was living in the other part of Wythe County.) This is about the time that Michael and Rebecca began having children so it makes sense that he would have been listed in 1830.
In the tax list for 1827 there was also a William and George Aker listed along with Michael Aker (Sr.) and Henry Arnold. In 1850,George and Williamwere living near Jackson Aker and Michael Aker, Rebecca's husband (possibly the Michael Aker Jr.) It appears that George's mother, Catherine was living with him. According to this census, she was born in Virginia about 1776. I have a feeling that George, William, Jackson, and Michael were all children of Michael and Catherine Aker and that Michael Aker Sr. was your John's brother.
Have you been able to make the connection between Michael Aker and Catherine Hepner of Shenandoah County with the Michael and Catherine of Wythe County? Any help would be greatly appreciated. '[16 Dec 2007] I agree with you that Michael and John were probably brothers. As far as Michael's marriage to a Catherine Rouse Whisman, both from Belgium, I wonder about that one too. George and William Aker were both alive in 1880 and they listed their parents as being born in Pennsylvania. If they were children of Michael and Catherine it seems as if a foreign country would have been listed rather than Pennsylvania. Jackson Aker, in 1880, listed his parents as being born in Virginia. Belgium seems like a long shot.
The three children born to a Michael Aker in Augusta County could still work if the census taker marked the incorrect boxes in the 1810 census. Note that there were three sons listed. George, William, and Jackson were born after 1810 and so the 1810 sons could include Jacob, Henry, and Michael Jr.
In 1820, Michael had seven sons listed and once again, this could include all the above mentioned men. There is a Henry Aker in the 1840 census and I haven't placed him with a family yet. He appears to have been born about 1810, but there again, the mark could have been placed in the wrong box. At least I would not rule him out as being Michael's son yet. -Diane Berry'
[129449] He was a 3g-grandfather of Marlin Aker Jr
