St. John's [German] Reformed Church Register, Augusta Co., VA, p. 52: baptized 15 Aug 1800, father: Michael Aker (cited by Jennifer Lyon. e-mail to L. Ellingham, 29-X-2002); Peter R. Schroeeder (pschroed@csusb.edu) to L. Ellingham [7 Mar 2009]: 'I'll start with Preble County Jacob Akers, who 13 February 1820 married Barbara Ott (Ut, Utt), youngest daughter of Francis Ott (1754-1821) and Catherine Nead (1759-1827: both died in Preble County). Jacob and "Barbary" join a collection of Otts (and others) and settle in Elkhart County, Benton Township. In the 1850 census we find "Jacob Acres," 51, born in Virginia; Barbara, 50; and children John (27), Samuel (21), Levi (18), and Sarah (16), all born in Ohio, and Rebecca (14) and Mahala (6), born in Indiana. Ten years later we learn that John, still part of the household, is an "idiot." After the 1860 census I can find no trace of Jacob. Barbara (70) and John are still together in the 1870 census; after that they too vanish. (I used to do a lot of searching.)
On 28 June 1851 Samuel Akers (the -s gets more and more attached to the name) marries Miranda Woods (1834-1886), daughter of Samuel Woods (1812-1875?) and Sarah Bashford (a mystery, of sorts; the couple were married in 1833 and she seems to have died by 1848, when Samuel remarries). Samuel and Miranda soon move to Syracuse (just south of the county line, in Kosciusko County), and does Samuel's brother Levi (who married Jane Phebus).
Samuel and Miranda have two children: Elmira Francis Akers (21 May 1857-8 August 1947) and Clemenza (1864-I don't have her death date handy); a daughter Alice, born in 1853, died young. Samuel and Levi served (briefly) in the Civil War; after Miranda's death Samuel remarried (1898: Elizabeth Wallis). He died 11 November 1917 and is buried in the Syracuse cemetery.
On 7 May 1876 Elmira Francis Akers married Jonathan Culler (1846-1890), son of John Culler (1784-1876) and Anna Hiestand (1784-1863). They had four children: Thomas (1877), Harrison (1878), Bessie (1880), and Miranda Mae (1882-1932). Miranda Mae was my mother's mother; she married Levi Irvon Treesh.
We're now drifting rather far from Akers. But I did actually meet my great-grandmother, Elmira Francis (still subsisting on her Civil War pension), in Syracuse, in 1945-6--just after the war. I was, alas, too young to ask her probing genealogical questions.
Very briefly, then: my mother, Hilda Marie Treesh (1911-1990) married Elver August Schroeder (1910-1986), and I'm the oldest (born 1940) of their three children.';
