[129461] Pinhook may have been just across the state line inVirginia. or possibly right on the state line. John Boggus was a local merchant and the Postmaster. John was a dyed in the wool Republican and the champion checker player of Ashe, Co., NC
[129458] He was born near Pinhook, located on the state line of Grayson County, Virginia and Ashe County, North Carolina. Pinhook a was community center about 5 miles east of the corner where Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee meet. Wiley's father died while Wiley was very young. By the time he was 12, in 1893, Wiley was in Maybuery, McDowell Co. WV. Wiley spelled the name Mayberry in his book, "The Autobiography of a Handicapped Rebel". The fact that Wiley ended up in Maybuery and that Joseph soon took his family there also may provide some hint of where Wiley's grandfather and Joseph's father, Thomas Jefferson had some roots. The man Wiley referred to as "Uncle Jake", who he describes as a "copper colored, old, bald slave Negro from Virginia" was thought by Wiley to "have known my people". Wiley said Uncle Jake was a hard-shelled Baptist preacher who "profoundly influenced my entire life".
[129464] He went to Cuba in November as a clean up force after the surrender of Spain during the Spanish American War. He returned to Savannah, Georgia to be mustered out of the service in May 5, 1899.
[177585] Account on pages 29, 30 & 31 "The Autobiography of a Handicapped Rebel" by J Wiley Aker, 1951. Rae's father was a butcher in Lordsburg New México.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Ashe County, North Carolina, the following were listed as boarders at the Joseph Aker household.
1.Thomas Hagerman, mulatto, single, Teamster, age 32 or 37, born in NC, father born in NC, mother born in NC;
2.Thomas Cranland, black, single, age 23, born in SC, father born in SC, mother born in SC;
3. Sidney Hutton, mulatto, married, Chemist/Coal Agent, age 30, born in MD, father born in MD, mother born in France.
Joseph did general blacksmithy work, some of his work in Ashe County and other locations came from the coal mining activity. Shoeing mules was his specialty.
[44032] His house was across the road from the Rainsville family place and a little bit ease, toward the town of Franklin. Wiley Aker's farm was about 3/4 mile farther east
[44025] Joseph (Joshua) was listed as 16 years old in the 1870 NC census, indicating he was born in 1854. Joseph was listed as 34 years old in the 1880 NC census, indicating he was born in 1846. The Grayson County Birth records lists the date as July 7, 1854, where his parents are listed as Thomas J. and Evey Aker. (page. 6) His grandson, Marlin Aker Sr., who lived with him for several years as a child is of the opinion that the 1846 date is more in keeping with what he knew of his grandfather's statements of his age. The 1846 date is also believable since his wife, Amanda was born in 1848 or 1849.
[164375] According to the 1870 census, likely taken early in the year, Amanda and Joshua (Joseph) were each living with their parents, two households apart. The existing marriage records of Ashe County do not contain their marriage. Some of the Ashe records are known to be have been either burned or stolen and are thus incomplete.
