John Baron Burg, who from 1912 until 1917 filled the office of probate judge at Albuquerque, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, May 31, 1873. His father, Carl o. Burg, a native of Germany, was born in 1843, and came to the United States in early manhood. In 1861 he responded to the country's call for aid to crush the rebellion in the South and enlisted in a New York regiment of infantry, with which he served throughout the war. He was with Sherman on the celebrated march to the sea and marched from Savannah, Georgia, to Cumberland, Maryland. He spent most of his life in the educational field, being a college professor for many years. In Pennsylvania he wedded March Pircher and they now reside in Washington D.C. Mrs. Burg is a daughter of Jacob and Elinor (Dawson) Pircher. Her father was a prominent merchant in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during the days when the canal passing through there was the main route of travel between the East and the West.
It was in the national capital that John Baron Burg prepared for a professional career, pursuing a law course in the Georgetown University, from which he was graduated with the class of 1897. He then opened an office in Washington, where he continued in the practice of law until 1909, when he sought the opportunities offered in the Southwest and made his way to Albuquerque, where he opened a law office and afterward established a real estate department. However, before his removal to New Mexico he had occupied a position in the post office department in Washington for four years, having been appointed in 1894. He then entered the field of journalism in Washington, with which he was connected for four years, or until his admission to the bar, after which he remained in active practice in Washington until 1909. Since that time he has followed his profession in New Mexico and with th various branches of law he is familiar, displaying marked ability as advocate and counselor in conneciton with many phases of both criminal and civil law. He is strong in argument, terse and decisive in his logic, and clear in his reasoning.
In Chicago, Illinois, in the 9th day of January, 1905, Mr. Burg was married to Miss Dolores Otero, a daughter of Mariano S. Otero, who was born in Balencia, New Mexico, and who died in 1904 at the age of fifty-eight years. He had been territorial delegate of New Mexico in congress. His wife, Filomena Perea de Otero, was a daughter of Jose Leandro Perea, of Bernalillo, New Mexico, who was one of the foremost business men of the Territory in his day. The religious faith of Mr. and Mrs. Burg is that of the Catholic church. His political allegiance is given to the republican party but while he keeps well informed on the questions and issues of the day and is able to support his position by intelligent argument, he has never sought office outside the strict path of his profession. He was elected to the first state legislature from Bernalillo county in 1911 and the following year was appointed probate judge of that county to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Judge Julius Staab, holding the office until January 1, 1917 and making a credible record by the prompt a faithful discharge of his duties.
