The San Juan Pueblo was a Tewa Indian town. Their name for it was O'Ke Owingeh (owingeh means Pueblo) It was the center town of the Pueblo Indians. In 1680 they declared war on the Spaniards. San Juan Pueblo is the site of the first capital of New Mexico, established by Juan de Onate in 1598. This settlement was called San Gabriel and is located on San Juan Pueblo land on the west side of the Rio Grande near its confluence with the Rio Chama.
San Juan Pueblo is one of the largest Tewa speaking Pueblos. The tribe has about 3000 members. The annual feast day is June 24 and is for the patron saint John. San Juan Pueblo, PO Box 1099, New Mexico 87566
Joe Brito of Moses Lake, WA, (509) 765-2942 said that in the late 1700's, 3 brothers came from Spain to Mexico. One settled in Mexico City, one (his ancestor) in Chichiwawa Mexico, and one went north to what is now New Mexico. His great-grandfather, ---- Brito, was a cousin of Mike's grandfather. [ this would have been a son of Josef Leon Brito or a cousin via one of Miguel Antonio's sons--but both were born in NM. The father of MAB was possibly the Miguel Brito who md to Maria Casilda in Santa Fe NM in Sept. 1774; both born about 1760.] Considering all this, Miguel Brito was probably the emigrant ancestor who emigrated to what is now the USA, NM., and the brother who stayed in Chichiwawa Mex. was Jose Brito's ancestor.
There was a Curandera [midwife/wisewoman/herbalist/massuesse whatever] that Mike Brito stayed with in the 1940's when he hurt his leg. Her name was Cirilia Tafoya in Rancho de Taos, about 25 miles from Dixon, before you get to Taos. She was related to the first Britos who came to NM but may or maynot have written it all down. She said several brothers came to Mexico from Portugal and then into NM. She was born about 1870.
1850 census shows : husband Jose Brito, age 28, and his wife Maria; son, Jose, age 8; dau Maria, age 4; dau, Rafaela, age 2.
1860 census shows: Husband, Jose Brito, age 44; Wife, Ventura Vigil, age 32; Children: Grabuel age 16, Rosa age 13, Rafaela age 11, Juana age 7, Ignacia age 5, Miguel age 4, Antonio age 2,

Miguel Antonio Brito is listed in the 1870 New Mexico Territorial Census Index on p 411 along with his father, Jose Leon Brito, and his father-in-law, Diego Romero.
1900 Census has Miguel Brito, b. Feb 1857 and his wife Benigna, b. Jan 1870, md 20 years. ten children, 4 living. One of the children was listed as their nephew, Juan A. Montoya, b. June 1885
The 1900 Census of NM has Miguel and his sons Elfido and Emelio as heads of households in Embudo.
I looked at and copied the last 2 rows of NM books in the SLC FHC on June 6, 2007 (There are
17 shelves of NM books and I copied the top 2 shelves (see my list--to Mora Co. NM) in May.
There are no Britos in the 1910 US census of San Juan County, NM or of McKinley Co NM, or of
Sierra Co NM, or of Grant Co NM, or of Luna Co NM.
Where was he from the birth of his child in 1891 to the birth of his child in 1899?!
