In the 1788 census: Don Extoval Maria de Codrova, European, native of Cadiz, age 32, retired Lieutenant married to D. Feliciana de Orcasists, Esponola, native of Paso, age 26, and has one 8 yr. old son and two daughter ages 6 and 1. Also has 1 single male servant, aged 16, 2 female servants, widows of 26 and 20 with one son of 3 years and a daughter of 1. (1788-2)
In the 1790 census: native of Cadiz, 35, retired Cavalry Lieutenant, Espanol, European. Felciana Espaaola, 28, two sons, ages 11 and 1 year and two daughters ages 8 and 3, an orphan boy ages 5, two female orphans 26 and 2 yrs old (1790-4)
Cristobal Maria Cordoba carried the title "Don" which before 1830 was given only to Spanish Nobility, which he achieved as a commissioned officer in the Queen's Calvary.

"During the Spanish era, Cordova Island was a partido or ward, often called La Playa. The area flooded on a fairly regular basis. Don Cristobal Maria de Cordoba owned the region around the 1790's. And that's why his ranch, and this piece of land was called Cordoba, later Cordoba Island. By the late 1800's this land grant passed to Juan Ascarate, a wealthy Juarez resident." The land that had once been Cristobal's is now a huge park (Chamizal National Park) on land that the US and Mexico fought over for over 100 years.
