[42926] Luis and Ursula were frequent visitors in the home of Marlin's great aunt, Dora Nusbaum, in Santa Fe. Dora's home, located at the corner of Washington Avenue and Nusbaum Street, was a social showplace for many years. She was hostess to many who lived in or visited Santa Fe. Simon, her husband, who died in 1921, had been active in territorial and early state politics and she was well know in political circles. Her meriendas (teas) were a must stop for visitors like Luis and Ursula, from Espańola, during the late 1940's. Her house was originally owned by Civil War Governor Henry Connelly. It was next owned by merchant Lehman Spiegelberg. U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes stayed in the home overnight during his visit to Santa Fe in 1880. Simon and Dallas purchased the home and lived in it after the Spiegelbergs. I visited Aunt Dallas several times with my grand father Sam (Pop) in the late 40s and early 50s and was very impressed with the home and its elaborate furnishings. Pop said the area just north of the house had been the cow pasture in the early 1900s when he and his brother, Fred, stayed with aunt Dallas to attend school in Santa Fe. The demolition of the house in late 1960 and early 1961 caused a great deal of controversy and was said to have pushed the formation of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation, which works to preserve historic buildings in Santa Fe. The home can be seen in photographs at The Museum of New Mexico by Jesse Nusbaum (Photo negative no. 61487), back yard, and Tyler Dingee (Negative no. 91901), front of the house facing Washington Avenue. (It appears that Jesse Nusbaum the photographer was not related to Uncle Simon.)
