[862] The Sargento Mayor was killed in an Apache ambush at el Parajo del Agua Escondida while driving livestock belonging to Gov. Diego de Vargas from el Paso del Norte northbound. An arrow pierced his kidney. He was buried at the abandoned pueblo of Sevilleta, on the east of the rio del Norte, 20 miles north of present day Socorro, New Mexico.

Passed muster with eighty horses, and five mules, all lean, suffering from lockjaw and worn out from the service of Alonso Garcia, his three sons, and two sons-in-law.
They all have a complement of personal arms supplied by the said lieutenant general and two of the sons and the two sons-in-law are married. There are twelve persons in the family and twenty two servants, and one other young man capable of bearing arms, carryring an harquebus belonging to his Majesty. He was robbed by the enemy and he signed, Alonso Garcia, lieutenant of the governor and captain-general of the jurisdiction of the Rio Abajo. He is married.
