GASPER HAPNER arrived in Philadelphia, Penn., on Sept. 19, 1753, on board the ship Leathley, with Captain John Lickley, from Hamburg, Germany. On the passenger lists, he signed his name as Gasper Hopner, Georg Gasper Hopner and Georg Gasper Hoppener. (Strassburger, Ralph Beaver, PA GERMAN PIONEERS, Vol. 1, pp. 536, 537, 538; Vol. 2, pp. 639, 640.) He wrote in the Roman script and began with an oversized "C" with the "a" placed in its center. He had me fooled for years -- he was making a "G"! No wonder the clerks wrote "Gasper"--that is what he was saying and writing. He also wrote "Hepner" but the clerks wrote "Hapner." The clerks wrote what they were hearing. The name-spelling problem, though a source of frustration, indicates that a Hapner person living today may be traced back to Gasper. Descendants of Gasper's brother George use the Hepner spelling. I have researched and documented the descendants of Gasper Hapner for 40 years. The one thing I lack is the maiden name of Gasper's wife, Mary/Polly. On the 1840 federal census she was over 100 years of age and was living with her son Henry. She is not on the 1850 census nor is she on the 1850 mortality census. She was 108 years of age when she died."

In "Genealogical Data Relating to the German Settlers of PA and Adjacent Territory," by Edward W. Hocker. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1981, page 113: "April 7, 1772 - Heinrich Hebener, born in Hanover and now working with Johann Andreas Rohr, locksmith, Second street, Philadelphia, came to America many years ago with his brothers, Georg and CASPER. Georg now lives in Carolina. Information is sought about CASPER, who formerly worked in Richard Wister's glass house in New Jersey (Salem)." There is also an unpublished manuscript by Abram L. Yost of New Lebanon, OH, dated September, 1976. I have a photocopy of this manuscript which I will gladly give to you. The introductory page begins: "HEPNER--The patriarch of the family of Hepner in the Miami Valley was George Hepner. He was born 1731 at Hanover, Germany, and had come to America in 1757 as a young man, accompanied by a brother. He settled in Lancaster Co, PA, and in 1760 married to Miss Nellie (or Utilla) Kline. After a few years they moved to Rockingham Co, Virginia, where they settled on a farm. They had two children: Catherine and Henry. In 1806 he came with his son Henry and family to OH. Here he died 1808, aged 77 years. He was known as a man of strong character and the founder of the Hepner Family. He was buried in a woods one and a quarter miles southeast of New Lebanon on the farm of Henry Schoenfelt, later Edward Schonefelt and more recently by C. P. Rotterman."
