[25667] His marriage record and several family stores indicate that this nickname, the Frenchman, followed him over much of his life.
[25673]
After Maria died, Joseph and his son Emile made the rounds of active mining camps hoping to make their fortunes. During this time son Lucas stayed with relatives.
[25675] As a result of his hatred for the French General Marshall Francois Achille Bazaine he always insisted that one of the family dogs be after the General.
[25676]
Listed in the July 16 1870 census of Los Conejos township of Conejos county, line 18, page 26, dwelling 183, family 178 were:
1. Joseph Girard, age 32, m, w, farmer; $500 personal property; born in France; father foreign born; mother foreign born.
2. Vitalia Salazar, age 37, f, w, keeping house; born in New Mexico
3. Emil Girard, age 1, m, w; born in Colorado; father foreign born; mother foreign born.
4. Miguel Rolly, age 24, m, w, Catholic Priest; $1500 personal property; born in France,
father foreign born; mother foreign born.
5. Antoine Large, age 20, m, w, farmer; born in France; father foreign born; mother foreign born.
6. Gasper Solocier, age 38, m, w, furrier; born in France; father foreign born; mother foreign born.
It appears the ages of Jose and Maria Vitalia were often misstated. The 1880 Colorado census indicates he was born in 1850, while the 1870 Colorado census says he was born in 1838 (the correct date).
[25681] He had been employed as a "journalier," an agricultural worker who was paid on a day to day basis.
[25683]
He enlisted as a volunteer at the city hall in Grenoble, France on March 19, 1859 in the 18th Battalion de Chasseurs à Pied à Vincennes (Hunters on foot from Vincennes or as Joseph later explained in Spanish, Cazadores al pie de Vincennes), a foot soldier battalion of the French Army. Joseph signed on for a period of 7 years (freeable on March 10, 1866). He reported for duty the next day, the 20th of March, with the rank of Chasseur 2nd class. He participated in battles at Palestro (May 30-31, 1859), Magenta on June 4, 1859, and at Solferino (June 24, 1859)
On June 5, 1862, Joseph signed up for an additional 7 year period to start on March 19 1866 (feeable on March 19, 1873). On July 2, 1862, the 18th Battalion de Chasseurs à Pied à Vincennes was assigned to the Expedition of Mexico, a force of about 38,000 French soldiers. Joseph was designated as a Trumpeteer, 2nd class on July 25, 1862. The 18th Battalion was re-enforced with 50 men from the 4th Battalion of the Army and left Metz on the 28th of August for the port of Cherbourg. They embarked for Mexico on August 31th and arrived in Vera Cruz on November 3, 1862.
When Joseph arrived in Mexico, he like the other French soldiers was garrisoned for a while at Orizaba for training. During some action at Puebla, Joseph was under the command of General Marshall Francois Achille Bazaine. Something about the General's actions greatly offended Joseph and he carried the grudge all his life. In 1864, Joseph was awarded "The Medal of Mexico." By mid 1865, the reign of Maximilian was in a state of crisis, money from France was withheld and pay to the soldiers was uncertain. About this time Joseph decided that a better future was to be obtained north of the Rio Grande. He and several compadres deserted the French Army and walked north.
Joseph spoke of fighting and winning a duel with an Austrian, whether one of his compadres or some other man is not known. What ever the case he ended up late that year in El Paso, Texas.
[25687] It appears he was attached to the 18th Battalion of Chasseurs when they were in Africa. They landed in Algeria and were somewhere to the south in Africa from May 27, 1856 until April 15, 1857, arriving back in Grenoble on May the 19, 1857 and then immediately returning to Africa until November 3rd. They arrived back in Grenoble on November 21, 1857. He told his grandsons that while in Africa he learned how to catch and butcher boa constrictors during lulls in the fighting from the German soldiers who were the enemy.
[25690]
His enlistment in the US Infantry was for a term of three years but it appears he served only about I year. His papers were witnessed by (first name not discernable) Buchanan, (title not discernable) of the 5th regiment of the US infantry. The enlistment paper bears the marks (256-B), 1098 and 1156 and is further identified as No. 6.

When Capulin is reached on this road make a left turn as you see the church. Very few burials have occurred since the New Capulin Cemetery was started in 1935.
