Eloisa Luna Otero Bergere, was a native of Los Lunas, Valencia County, New Mexico, born March 1, 1864, the youngest child of Don Antonio Jose Luna and Isabella Baca de Luna, whose ancestors in both the paternal and maternal lines were among the most notable and influential families taking part in the history of New Mexico. In Spain, the list of those of the family patronymic, accounts of whose careers in public or official life have been handed down to posterity, reveals the names if one who was an archbishop and cardinal of the Church and another who represented the Spanish monarch in Mexico, occupying th exalted position of Viceroy of Spain, whose court was on a par with that of royalty itself.
Eloisa Luna was a direct descendant of Don Domingo de Luna, whose ancesters had been among the Conquistadores of the 17th century and re-conquistadores under the great governor and captain-general, Don Diego de Vargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon, one of them, Captain Don Pedro de Luna, was prominent among the hacenderos of the Rio Abajo at the time of the Pueblo Indian Revolution of 1680, and who served under Don Antonio de Otermin, governor and captain-general in his unsuccessful effort to re-conquer the "kingdom and provinces of New Mexico in 1681. On account of the military and other public services of these distinguished pioneers in New Mexico history, they were given a large tract of grant of land in the valley of the Rio Grande, known as the San Clemente Grant, by the governor and captain-general, in area more than one hundred thousand acres. On this tract at Los Lunas, the forbears of Dona Eloisa made settlement and there they lived and passed on to their reward, leaving to their posterity a record of honorable and distinguished citizenship, whether under Spanish, Mexican or Indian sovereignty.
Three brothers of Dona Eloisa achieved distinction in the annals of New Mexico; Don Jesus M. Luna, a prominent and highly respected citizen, captain of militia, Indian fighter, who held many positions of honor and trust to which he was elected by the people; Don Tranquelino Luna, of signal ability, commanding figure and charming personality, delegate in Congress from New Mexico; and Don Salomon Luna, for more than a quarter of a century a member of the Republican National Committee and the recognized political leader of his party in the Territory and State. In the world of business and finance he was conceded by all as one of the leading figures in the Southwest. He died in 1912. There was on sister, Luz, who married Don Jose Maria Romero, of which union there were three girls; Ofelia, who married Henry Connelly, son of Dr. Henry Connelly, was governor of New Mexico, Zulema, who married Mariano F. Sena, of Santa Fe, and Maria, who married John Ryan.
As a child, Dona Eloisa gave great promise of the grace and beauty which blossomed with the flower of early womanhood. Having received her primary education from private tutors, early in life she crossed the great plains in stage-coach days over the famous Santa Fe Trail to Kansas City and St. Louis, thence to New York, where, in prominent educational institutions, her education was finished.
Returning to New Mexico in 1878, her position and popularity in social circles in the Rio Abajo and at the territorial capital, were supreme, and in the folowing year she married Don Manuel B. Otero, one of the most highly cultured of New Mexicans, educated Europe, a fluent linguist and scion of one of the most notable of New Mexican families, the son of Don Manuel Antonio and Dolores Chaves Otero. His father was decended from one of the most distinguished families of Chihuahua and New Mexico, of the pure Spanish blood, and leaders in the economic and financial affairs of the territory for many years; an uncle, Don Antonio Jose Otero, a man of fine ability but not "learned in the law," was appointed a Justice of the Superior Court by General Stephen Watts Kearny at the time of the American Conquest in 1846. His mother was the daughter of Don Francisco Xavier Chavez, the father of Don Felipe Chavez of Belen, New Mexico.
Of her marriage with Don Manuel B. Otero, three children were born; Eduardo Manuel, highly prominent in the business affairs of New Mexico, the largest sheep-grower in the Southwest, and equally prominent in the leadership and councils of the party of his political faith; Adelina "Nina" Emilia, of charming personality, intellectual, prominent in the realm of woman's club activities, superintendent of schools of Santa Fe County, candidate of her party for Congress in 1922, and later an inspector at large of the Department of the Interior, assigned to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, in all of which her service to the public has most praiseworthy and notable; and Manuel Basilio Otero, one of the most highly esteemed of present day New Mexicans, beloved by all who have the privilege of his acquaintance and friendship, and in 1924 the candidate of the Republilcan party for the Governorship of the state.
