The name Niño Ladrón de Guevara first appears in Nuevo Mexico with Nicolás Niño Ladrón de Guevara Ortiz. The name came from the family of his mother. This name has an interesting origin as recounted in the Diccionaria Heraldico y Genealogico de Apellidos Españoles y Americanos, by Alberto and Arturo Garcia Carraffa, Salamanca (1931). The account was unearthed by Claire Ortiz Hill.
The story goes as follows: It seems that the founder of the family in Spain was Sir Sancho Guillermo, Duke of Britanny of the royal house of France. He went to Navarra in the year 716 to fight the Moors. In 882, a descendent of his by the name of Sancho de Guevara was again fighting the Moors who had just killed King Garcia Iñiguez (reigned in Navarra 852-882) and his wife Doña Urraca in the battle of Aibar or Baldillon. Sancho went to find the bodies of the king and queen. He found that the queen had been hacked to death and being pregnant, the arm of a little unborn boy was protruding from her body. Sancho determined the boy was alive, saved him and secretly raised him as his son in the mountains until he was either 7 or 17 (the account is unclear but 17 seems to fit). Then Sancho revealed the boy's true identity and worked to have the lad named King of Navarra as King Sancho Garces (905-925). Because Sancho had saved the boy's life, Sancho was given the name Niño Ladrón de Guevara (little boy thief from Guevara). Proof of nobility for the Ladrón de Guevara family is said to exist that was recognized in the late 16th century.
[3585] Josefa had been twice exiled to Bernalillo because of the relationship. Nicolas was already Alcalde Mayor at this date.
[3588] He was listed as having seven children on the military list but the civilian list of colonists list six children, perhaps a girl named Ana six years old died before the caravan started north from Zacatecas.
[3591] Nicolas was a charter member of the reconstituted villa de Santa Cruz. He held the rank of Sargento was appointed militia captain and lieutenant Alcalde Mayor.
[3596] He gave his age as 50 years, old more or less, and barely signed his name. The matter under consideration, brought up during Vargas' residencia was that some of Vargas' relatives had spoken against the cabildo of Santa Fe to the advantage of Vargas. Nicolas was one of those mentioned and he was identified as married to Marianna de Vargas, sobrina (niece) of don Diego de Vargas. At the present the relationship, true niece or daughter of a cousin as the term was sometimes used, has not been discovered in the much studied genealogy of Vargas. Marriana was several times identified as a Vargas in wills and diligencias, so there must be truth in some relationship.
