* According to the U.S. Census of 1870, Guadalupe (20) and his wife Victoria Lucero (15), were listed as husband and wife. Guadalupe Otero's occupation was that of a school teacher and his wife Victoria Lucero was that of a housewife. They were both living at Tajique, NM Territory, Valencia County, Pct # 6 at the time. The census was taken in early December of 1869 by Manuel R. Otero.
* As Justice of the Peace in Precinct No. 18 of Torreon, New Mexico, Guadalupe Otero married Jose Epifanio Lucero and Maria Candelaria in Torreon, New Mexico on March 17, 1877, no witnesses were given. This marriage was recorded May 2, 1877 in Valencia County by Manuel R. Otero, Clerk.
* According to family history and the 1880 U.S. Census for New Mexico, Valencia County, Township of Torreon, Guadalupe Otero's occupation is listed as lawyer at age 29.
* Guadalupe Otero was elected Copying Clerk for the Council (N.M. State Senate) on December 27, 1886, but was discharged by resolution on January 10, 1887.
*Also, in 1886 Guadalupe Otero co-founded and organized the Catholic Temperance Movement in eastern Valencia and Santa Fe, New Mexico. In that year, this announcement appeared in the NEW MEXICAN, "A Good Movement., To the Editor of the NEW MEXICAN., Tajique, N.M. December 19, 1886 - A resolution of thanks was unanimously passed by the temperance society of Tajique to Hon. J. Francisco Chavez, of Valencia, for the interest he is taken in the Catholic temperence movement, by presenting to the society 125 copies of the rules and regulations which the Most Rev. J. B. Salpointe had previously formulated for the said society. It was resolved, furthermore, that this resolution be published in the NEW MEXICAN at Santa Fe. GUADALUPE OTERO, Secretary.... E.A. DOW, President." Later in the Daily New Mexican of Santa Fe, New Mexico you will find the following article written about Guadalupe Otero, dated Tuesday, December 28, 1886: "Don Guadalupe Otero, of Valencia County, who was yesterday elected copying clerk of the senate, paid the NEW MEXICAN quarters a pleasant call today. Mr. Otero is an intelligent and progressive citizen and while in Santa Fe will organize a branch of the Catholic temperance movement which he and E.A. Dow, esq., have so successfully established in eastern Valencia." (E.A. Dow was from Iowa and both his parents were from New York, both he and his wife Barbara McAfee resided in Tajique, New Mexico and was a close aquaintance of Guadalupe Otero of Torreon, NM)
*Guadalupe Otero served as a Notary Public and his appointments by the Governor of New Mexico were as follows, May 16, 1888, May 7, 1892 and May 18, 1896 until the time of his death March 19, 1898. Each commission was for a four-year term.
*The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Monday, January 14, 1889 page 1, reported proceedings of the Statehood Convention at Santa Fe. It also reported strong resolutions being adopted favoring a State Government. Delegates were present from every county in the territory, including Guadalupe Otero and J. Francisco Chavez of Valencia County.
*According to the 1890 Eleventh Census of the United States found at the archives of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, Guadalupe Otero was the Enumerator of District #95 (Tajique, Manzano and Torreon, New Mexico) Valencia County who showed the surviving soldiers, sailors, and marines and widows, etc., during the war of rebellion.
*The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Wednesday, April 9, 1890 page4, reported the following list of grand jurors of the present Valencia county court. The grand jury consisted of the following names: Salvador Gonzales, Federico Baca, Jose Miguel Chavez, Dionicio Torres, Benturo Gauna, Nicholas S. Sanchez, Juan Gabaldon, Teofilo Baca, Dolores Chavez, Guadalupe Otero, Jose M. Jaramillo, and Miguel Baca. Guadalupe Otero was appointed foreman.
*On December 29, 1890, Guadalupe Otero was elected as an official of the Council (N.M. State Senate) and became the official "Assistant Translator," during the 29th Legislative Assembly until the end of 1892. Guadalupe translated various laws passed by the legislative bodies in Santa Fe, which were signed by the Governor, from English to Spanish, which were then bound into official law books.
*Again, The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Tuesday, August 23, 1892 page 4, reported the following Valencia delegates as follows: "At the convention at Los Lunas last Saturday the following delegates were elected to attend the territorial convention at Las Vegas on the 25th: Col. Francisco Chaves, Tranquilino Luna, Sol. Luna, F.M. Spear, Carlos Baca, Sylvestre Mirabal, Guadalupe Otero, Max Luna, A.M. Bergere and Clark M. Carr. The delegation is in favor of T.B. Catron for delegate to congress."
*On Thursday, June 15, 1893 page 4, The Albuquerque Daily Citizen reported the following: "Guadalupe Otero, a wealthy sheep raiser of the Sandia mountains, attended a dance at Tijeras, night before last, and while he was sleeping off the effects of his fun, some person stole his coat, vest, gold watch and chain."
*The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Thursday, October 5, 1893 page 4, reported the list of "United States grand jurors for October, A.D. 1893, term of court of the second judicial district of New Mexico: Andrew Grob, foreman, Jose E. Gutierres, Benito Gallegos, Manuel Sanchez, Bartolo Chavez, Jose Maria Aragon, Rafael Gabaldon, Atanacio Gallegos, Jose Gonzales y Montoya, Guadalupe Otero, Rafael Rubi, Antonio Candelaria, Pedro Subert, Juan Naranjo, Jose Maria Salinas, Gregorio Lujan, J.Q. Wills, Nicanor Martinez, F.M. Sims, Felix Romero and Juan Chavez y Gabaldon."
*According to The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Friday, September 25, 1896, page 1, it listed the following delegates from Valencia County who were entitled to be seated in the territorial republican convention which convened on Saturday, September 26, 1896 at Las Vegas, New Mexico: (It also lists other delegates from other N.M.counties) Solomon Luna, Max Luna, J. Francisco Chaves, Guadalupe Otero, A.M. Bergere, Victor Sais, Manuel Padilla y Chaves and Jesus Sanches y Aragon. (Note: Guadalupe Otero was also 2nd cousin to Miguel A. Otero II, Territorial Governor of New Mexico, 1897-1906)
*Guadalupe Otero was elected School Superintendent of Valencia County on November 3, 1896. His political opponent for the office of school superintendent was August Kayser. The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated, November 13, 1896 reported the vote tabulation for Valencia county superintendent as follows: Guadalupe Otero, 1,590 votes and August Kayser with 218 votes. Guadalupe Otero of Torreon, New Mexico served as school superintendent for Valencia County, New Mexico until the time of his death at Manzano, New Mexico on March 19, 1898. His last known offical letter written to the Valencia County Commision, was dated, May 22, 1897 notifying them of the "formation of a new school district."
According to Eduardo Otero, Alfonso Otero's uncle, Guadalupe Otero's father Antonio Jose Otero, died when he was still quite young. Guadalupe's much older wealthy second cousin Manuel A. Otero, of La Constancia in Valencia County and the father of Manuel B. Otero, asked Guadalupe's mother if she would allow him to pay for his schooling and expenses, so that he could be formally educated in Europe with his other cousins. His mother, Maria Gertrudis Herrera de Otero relunctantly agreed and according to Guadalupe, it took him 3 months to get to his destination in Europe. Another family member stated that Guadalupe Otero was educated at the University of Mexico City. Guadalupe Otero later returned to Torreon, New Mexico and married his young wife, Victoria Lucero. He was so grateful to Manuel A. Otero, whom he referred to as uncle Manuel, as that was the custom in those days, that he named his first male child after him. Guadalupe Otero also named his first daughter after Manuel A. Otero's wife, Dolores. Guadalupe was also a linguist, fluent in 7 languages; English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Navajo and Isleta Pueblo. Of the seven languages that he was fluent in, he could write five.
On Wednesday afternoon, March 23, 1898, The Albuquerque Daily Citizen wrote the following article on their front page: " A FATAL FALL, Guadalupe Otero, School Superintendent of Valencia County, Dead." "Word reached the city late yesterday afternoon, direct from Torreon, Valencia County, that the little Mexican village was in mourning over the tragic death of Guadalupe Otero, the public school superintendent of that county. Mr. Otero was a visitor to this city several days of last week, and while here, as usual, met a number of warm friends, who made his stay in the metropolis exceedingly pleasant and convival. He returned to his home at Torreon on last Saturday afternoon, and now the report reaches this city that on Sunday afternoon, while sitting on the porch, he fell over and struck the ground on his head. When the members of the family came to his assistance they found Mr. Otero dead, his neck having been broken in the fall. The deceased was a well known republican politician of Valencia county, and was a relative of the Oteros and Armijos of this city. It is also understood that he was a relative of Governor Otero."
However, family members said, Guadalupe Otero was found dead in Manzano, New Mexico on March 19, 1898, while still serving as Valencia County School Superidendent. According to Eduardo Otero, his grandson, Guadalupe Otero was thought to have been killed by an Indian. One of his other grandson's Filiberto "Joe" Montoya said, Guadalupe Otero was found dead near an arroyo in Manzano, New Mexico with his neck broken. Others claimed that in his late adult life, Guadalupe Otero would drink vinegar and sometimes camphor oil to maintain his drinking habit. And, Luciano Otero, a great-nephew, heard that Guadalupe had choked on his vomit due to some heavy drinking that day. Yet, another person from Torreon by the name of Antonio Benavidez who knew Guadalupe told his great-grandson, Alfonso Otero that Guadalupe Otero was going to prosecute some cattle rustlers in court and that one of the accused gang members, by the name of " Saavedra" murdered him.
The Albuquerque Daily Citizen, dated Wednesday, April 6, 1898, page 4 later wrote the following, "Word reached this city yesterday, in a letter from Chilli, that a son of the late Guadalupe Otero, who died a few days ago at Tajique, had shot and mortally wounded a man near Los Lunas and was now in jail in Valencia county. The shootist is said to be only 18 years of age, and a drunken quarrel was the cause of the shooting. No further particulars received."
Guadalupe Otero's eldest son, Manuel D.A. Otero was 18 years of age at the time this article was published. Also, according to Guadalupe Otero's estate, filed in Valencia County Clerks Office in box 4, envelope 258, his widow, Victoria Lucero de Otero states that Guadalupe Otero died close to the 19th of March 1898 at the town of Manzano in the county of Valencia and Territory of New Mexico. And, that at the time of the deceased's death he was a resident of Torreon, county of Valencia and Territory of New Mexico. It also names the deceased's heirs as follows, Victoria Lucero de Otero, widow, Dolores Otero, Juliana Otero, Manuel D.A. Otero, Abednago A. Otero, Guadalupe Otero and Maria Gertrudis Otero, all legitimate children of the deceased. This declaration was witnessed by Col. J. Franciso Chaves, Notary Public of Valencia county and attested at Torreon, New Mexico on March 31, 1898. Alfonso Otero's father, Manuel D.A. Otero Jr., was also told by his father, that the Catholic priest of Torreon, by the name of Father L. Carpentier refused to give Guadalupe Otero a funeral mass or the priestly rites, because when Guadalupe Otero was found dead, he apparently had alcohol in his body. At that time, according to church law, anyone who died under the influence of alcohol would not receive the sacraments or a funeral mass. The Catholic priest also refused to bless Guadalupe's gravesite, because "he had died in sin." Therefore, he was buried by his immediate family just outside of the official church cemetery in Torreon, New Mexico. Later, as the cemetery was extended, Guadalupe's body ended up in the center of the cemetery. There is no marker at the cemetery or any evidence at this time to show where he was buried. However, people who knew Guadalupe Otero all agreed that he was mild-mannered, very educated and enjoyed having a drink occaisionally, and they all loved and respected him. Guadalupe being very intelligent and well educated man also understood and talked about many new things to come. He would tell folks in New Mexico that one day people were going to fly, but they thought he was speaking nonsense, since he usually had a drink or two when he told these stories. Actually, he probably saw the beginnings of air flight in Europe in the form of ballooning or primitive aircrafts. Al Otero's grandmother, Maria Lujan de Castillo also said that Guadalupe Otero wrote and organized the best "Pastorelas" or re-enactment of Christ's birth, during the Christmas holidays and that people in Torreon really admired him for that.

Guadalupe Otero was short and stocky in stature, brown eyes and black hair. He was also a poet and would use his poetry at local dances which was then the custom. En esos tiempos hechaban versos and once during a dance in Torreon, New Mexico which they called "el valse de la silla" they called on Guadalupe to say a verse to whomever sat on a designated chair and sometimes they would get angry for the versos that were said to them. Once there was a man con un ojo tuerto and he took a girl to the dance who had a large hoop, entonces this man told Guadalupe to compose and tell the woman a verse. So, Guadalupe Otero told the woman the following, "con una del hoope grande es con la que yo me enrrede y como el hoope era tan grande enrredado me quede. So then the woman told Guadalupe to tell the one eyed man to compose a verse from her to him. So then Guadalupe told the man the following, "y no ay de faltar un tuerto, teniendo su media luz, cargar y hiebar el muerto y quedar con el otro abierto." Guadalupe Otero also had a saying, "unos son porque nacen y otros son porque los hacen."

La peticion de Victoria Lucero de Otero, residenta de Torreon, en dicho condado, viuda del finado Guadalupe Otero, y de Manuel de A. Otero, tambien residente del mismo lugar, Condado y Territorio, uno de los hijos lejitimos de dicho finado, Guadalupe Otero, respetuosamente manifiesta:
Que Guadalupe Otero fallecio acerca del dia 19 de Marzo, A.D. de 1898, en la plaza de Manzano, en el Condado de Valencia y Territorio de Nuevo Mexico.
Que el dicho finado, al tiempo de su fallecimiento era un residente de Torreon, en el Condado de Valencia y Territorio de Nuevo Mexico.
Que dicho finado dejo dejo estado en Torreon, en dicho Condado de Valencia, Territorio de Nuevo Mexico, consistiendo de propiedad Real y Personal;
Que el valor de dicha propiedad, y su caracter, al mejor del concimiento de los peticionarios, consiste de casa de residencia, y tierras de labranza, del valor de Cuatro cientos pesos. Toda la propiedad mencionada arriba fue adquirida por el dicho finado despues de su matrimonio con la primera de vuestros applicantes y una de las peticionarias, por lo que deviene por propiedad comun del Estado:
Que los herederos forzoses, de dicho finado son Victoria Lucero de Otero, viuda del dicho finado, Dolores Otero, Juliana Otero, Manuel de A. Otero, Abednago A. Otero, Guadalupe Otero y Maria G. Otero, todos hijos legitimos de dicho finado Guadalupe Otero y todos residentes de Torreon en el Condado de Valencia y Territorio de Nuevo Mexico.
Que se ha hecho especial pezquiza especial y debida investigacion para averiguar si dicho finado habia dejado alguna voluntad o testamento pero que ninguno se ha hallado y a segun al mejor conocimiento, informacion y creencia de vuestros peticionarios el finado fallecio ab intestato:
Que Victoria Lucero de Otero, es la viuda de dicho finado y por lo tanto, segun se ha informado y cree ser verdad, esta entitulada a letras de administracion de dicho estado; y ademas peticiona e impetra que Manuel de A. Otero uno de sus hijos y herederos legitimos de dicho finado sea acompanado con ella y que sea nombrado coadministrador de dicho estado del finado Guadalupe Otero y Vuestros peticionarios siempre rogaran.
