JUANA MARIA MONTOYA’S LINEAGE Article in HGRC Journal- Herencia Vol-16 Issue 3 July 2008
A CREDIBLE HYPOTHESIS By Dorothy Chavez Wiskup
A few months ago while I was researching the genealogy of Florencia Alderete, the great grandmother of my cousin Gloria Chavez Robinson, I came upon some intriguing clues as to the ancestry of our - Gloria’s and mine - great great grandmother Juana Maria “Juanita†Montoya.
For a number of years, I had placed what little I had on Juana Maria on the back burner and had pursued other less daunting lines. What tweaked my interest in Juana Maria again was the 1860 census for Polvadera. In checking out this census for Florencia Alderete’s line, I noticed that Florencia’s grandparents, Dolores Alderete and Guadalupe Sedillo; Juana Maria’s in-laws, Jose Antonio Chaves and Concepcion Armijo: and the supposed parents of Juana Maria, Juan Montoya and Maria Andrea (no last name), all lived in close proximity to each other. As I was compiling more information on Florencia Alderete, more clues surfaced. I put them aside and after I completed the work on Florencia, I went back to what little information I had on Juana Maria and did what I call parallel investigating.
What I had previously compiled on Juana Maria was
On her son Jesus Chaves’ death certificate it stated that his mother Juana Maria was born in Corrales.
On Juana Maria’s first known child’s baptism record, it stated that her parents were Juan Montoya and Maria Andrea (no last name). I had checked out Corrales and Albuquerque baptisms for a Juana Maria whose parents were Juan Montoya and Maria Andrea. Nothing was found. There were some other possibilities but I had no linchpin to connect them to Juana Maria.
I had checked out the 1850 census and found no Juan Montoya and Maria Andrea but did find this couple in the 1860 census living in Polvadera. It stated Juan was 55 and Maria Andrea was 26. Included in this household were Trinidad 15, Jose 6, Feilpa 3, Juan 4 and Nicolas 1. It was possible that this was the family for they lived in close proximity to Juana Maria’s in-laws, Jose Antonio Chaves and Concepcion Armijo. The problem with this was that Juana Maria was older than Maria Andrea.
So given the new clues I had found while researching Florencia Alderete plus the young age of Maria Andrea, I hypothesised that Maria Andrea was not the mother but the stepmother of Juana Maria and Trinidad. The next step was to connect Trinidad and Juana Maria to Corrales.
I went back to the Corrales baptisms and sifted through the possibilities. After numerous rejections, one family seemed to fit. A Juan Montoya and Maria Luciana Martines baptised a daughter Juana Maria on June 29, 1828. In 1846, shortly after Luciana died, Juan married Gabriela Gonzales. They baptised a daughter Maria Trinidad de Los Dolores on May 23, 1847. This was the possible linchpin.
I then checked the 1850 census and found Juan Montoya 44, Gabriela 30, Juanita 20, Trinidad 4, and Maria Los Angeles 8, living in Bernallilo County. Another possible linchpin.
So I added to my hypothesis. I believe that Juan Montoya migrated south some time after 1850 to Polvadera. I also believe that Gabriela died and that Juan remarried or had a common law union with Maria Andrea. No marriage record for Maria Andrea or death record for Gabriela has surfaced yet.
My next step was to go back to the 1860 census for Polvadera and investigate the children who were listed with Juan and Maria Andrea. I started with the youngest and worked my way up to Trinidad. With Trinidad, I hit pay dirt. I found two marriage records for her and with them a wealth of information.
Trinidad’s first marriage was to Bernave Sedillo on June 8, 1863. The record showed that she was living in Polvadera and her parents were Juan Montoya and Gabriela Gonzales. It also stated that Gabriela was deceased. Bernave’s parents were Jose Angel Sedillo and Ana Maria Chaves. Ana Maria was the sister to Jose Antonio Chaves. Jose Antonio was Juana Maria Montoya’s father in law.
The padrinos for this first marriage were Victor Baca and Gertrudes Alderete. Gertrudes was an aunt to Florencia Alderete, my cousin Gloria Chavez Robinson’s great grandmother. Florencia married one of Juana Maria Montoya’s sons - Veneslado Chaves. Florencia’s father, Julian Alderete was the brother to Gertrudes Alderete. Their mother was Guadalupe Sedillo. Guadalupe became Trinidad Montoya’s sister in law when Trinidad married her younger brother Bernave Sedillo. Guadalupe and Bernave Sedillo were niece and nephew respectively to Jose Antonio Chaves. Jose Antonio was Juana Maria Montoya’s father in law.
Trinidad married again on December 2,1868 to Jose Eduvigen Chaves. The record stated she was now living in Cañada Alamosa (Monticello) where Juana Maria Montoya lived. The record also stated that her parents were Juan Montoya and Gabriela Gonzales and that Gabriela was dead.
The padrinos for this marriage were Juan Montoya and Maria Trujillo. Maria was an Aunt to Petra Montoya. Petra was married to Jesus Chaves. Jesus was one of Juana Maria Montoya’s sons.
On August 12,1869 the sons of Trinidad Montoya and Juana Maria Montoya, Jose Celedon Chaves and Refugio Chaves respectively were baptised at St. Ignacio mission in Cañada Alamosa. The final linchpin for me was the 1870 census for Cañada Alamosa which shows Trinidad Montoya living in very close proximity to Juana Maria Montoya.
Based on the information cited, my educated guess would be that Juana Maria Montoya and Trinidad Montoya were half sisters and that Maria Andrea (no last name) was their stepmother; that Juan Montoya migrated south sometime after 1850 and settled in Polvadera where Juana Maria’s future spouse Bernave Chaves and Trinidad’s first spouse Bernave Sedillo lived; some time after 1865 both families moved to Cañada Alamosa.
All this came about because I was doing a little research for my cousin Gloria and what I possibly uncovered was the linage for our great great grandmother Juana Maria Montoya.
