The 1870 census for Wahoo, Nebraska, shows J.A. Rivon, age 28, farmer,born in Sweden. It also shows "-----, Cicelia, age 21, keeps house."This would indicate she is his wife. Cicelia may be Cecilia as oralfamily history says. Oral history says his wife died shortly after thebirth of Nellie and Nellie was given to Thomas B. Chapman and TirsaAguirre Chapman to raise. After Thomas Chapman's death, Tirsa marriedMoises Vigil and they raised Nellie in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Nellie'smarriage to Telesforo Chavez shows them as adoptive parents with"Chappeman" written in above Moises' name.
The 1870 census for Wahoo, Nebraska, shows Thomas Chapman, age 40,farmer, born in Pennsylvania. His wife is Tersita, age 20, keeping house,born in Chihuahua, Mexico. According to oral history, Nellie's motherdied shortly after her birth. Her father, J.A. Rivon, was unable toraise her and gave her to the Chapmans to raise. After Chapman's death,Tersita married Moises Vigil. They raised Nellie apparently in LasCruces, New Mexico. Nellie's marriage to Telesforo Chavez shows theVigils as her adoptive parents with "Chappeman" written in above Moise'sname.
The 1890 Special Schedule for New Mexico shows Tirca A. Vigil, family,widow of Capt. Thomas B. Chapman, Capt., E, 5th California Infantry, 1861to 1864, and Capt. 1st California V Infantry, Sept. 1864 to 1886. Thereis a note, "...his widow remarried (illegible) Moses Vigil."
The 1900 census shows Nellie Chavez was the wife of Telesforo Chavez.She was born in September, 1872 in Nebraska. Her father is shown as bornin Iowa and her mother in Nebraska.
