Eduardo M. Otero, president of the Wool Growers' Association of New Mexico, is one of the foremost sheep and stockmen in this section of the Southwest.
He descends from an old and well known family of New Mexico, where the name of Otero has long been prominent in both the public and business life of the State.
Eduardo M. Otero was born August 24, l880, at Los Lunas, New Mexico, a son of Manuel B. and Eloisa (Luna) Otero. His father was a well known stockman in his day but passed away when but twenty-six years of age, after which the mother married A.M. Bergere, of Santa Fe. She also passed away in l9l4.
Eduardo M. Otero was educated at Christian Brothers College of St. Louis, after which he engaged in the sheep business with his uncle, Solomon Luna, of Los Lunas, one of the most extensive sheep raisers in the entire Southwest. This association with his uncle was a valuable training for Mr. Otero and gave him a thorough, practical knowledge of every branch of the sheep raising business-- in fact, mr. Otero has at some time or other acted in about every capacity to be filled in connection with that business. For a number of years before the death of his uncle in l9l2, Mr. Otero had been in charge of a large portion of Mr. Luna's extensive stock raising interests. In all he spent fourteen years with that gentleman . Mr. Otero was afterwards for eight months in Mexico City and upon the death of Mr. Luna he inherited an interest in the large estate thus left. In the management of his extensive interests, Mr. Otero has shown marked ability and while a comparatively young man, he occupies a foremost position among the stockmen of New Mexico. His flocks include over fifty thousand head of sheep and his herds of cattle are extensive, while his ranch interests represent some of the best managed and finest agricultural properties in the State.
He has acquainted himself with every phase of the business and that he occupies a high position in trade circles is indicated by the fact that he was chosen as head of the Wool Growers' Association of the State, being the youngest man who has ever filled that position.
Fraternally, Mr. Otero is connected with the Elks, while his religious faith is that of the Catholic church and his political belief is that of the republican party. He is fond of outdoor life in its every phase, and his training and experience well qualify him for the interests which now claim his attention.
Both, he and Mrs. Otero, who previous to her marriage was Miss Josefita Manderfield, daughter of the late William H. Manderfield, who during his life- time was the owner and editor of the Santa Fe New Mexican, in Territorial days, the most influential journal west of the Missouri river, of Santa Fe, are well known in the best social circles and dispense a lavish hospitality at their residence in Los Lunas, which is one of the finest ranch homes in the State.
