Francisco Pérez SERRANO was NOT married to Apolonia (Polonia) OR TIZ. He was married to Doña María Guadalupe AGUIRRE.
His son, Francisco Pérez SERRANO, was married to Apolonia ORTIZ , 28 May 1810.

Don Francisco PÉREZ SERRANO was a member of the "Leather-Jackets , " at the Presidio de Santa Fé under Governor and "Capitán Gene ral" Juan Bautista de Anza (1778-1787), as recorded in the muste r list of 1 Mar 1781 (P.37, New Mexico Genealogist; 2 Jun 1993).

"Leather-Jackets" were known as "Soldados de Cuera."

Soldados de Cuera
by Michael R. Hardwick_

_______ The origin of presidial troops in New Spain goes back t o the sixteenth century._ A line of fortified outposts called pr esidios was constructed north of Mexico City by 1570 to contai n raids by the Chichimeca Indians._ Two centuries later the lin e of presidios or forts moved into what is now the American Sout hwest and extended from Texas to California._

_______ Soldados de Cuera manning frontier presidios were a uniq ue branch of the Spanish colonial armed forces, distinct from Sp ain's regular soldiers._ They were distinguished from Spanish re gulars not only in having been born and reared in the frontier p rovinces and thus adapted to harsh conditions but also in havin g their own regulations._ Reglamentos of both 1729 and 1772 wer e distinct from those ordenanzas governing the regular army._ Pr esidial soldiers were more heavily armed and equipped than the r egular army._ In addition to standard weapons of Spanish regular s (musket, pistols, and saber), _ soldados de cuera carried a lan ce, a shield, and a heavy coat of leather armor._ The reglament o of 1729 specified that each presidial trooper was to have si x horses and one mule at his disposal._ The ordinary Spanish dra goon only had two horses available to him._

_______ The soldado de cuera was in fact named for his leather a rmor._ The cuera was a heavy, knee-length, sleeveless coat._ I t consisted of several layers of well-cured buckskin which wer e bound together at the edges with a strong seam and secured t o the body by encircling straps._ For protection, and in additio n to the leather jacket, the presidial soldier carried a shield. _ In form, there were two varieties in use._ The rodela, was a r ound shield. The adarga, was a shield design copied from the Moo rs in Spain which consisted of two overlapping ovals._

_______ For offensive weapons, soldados de cuera, were armed wit h a smoothbore musket called an escopeta of .69 caliber, two pis tols of the same caliber, a short sword, similar in design t o a European hunting sword, called an espada ancha, a dagger or _ puñal , and a lance or lanza._ Since cuera dragoons primaril y fought as mounted troops, the lance was their principle weapo n of choice._ The reliance on the lance was reinforced by inadeq uate supplies of powder on the frontier for firearms._

_______ The enlisted uniform of the enlisted cuera dragoons cons isted of a short blue coat or chupa with red collar, cuffs, an d lapels._ Enlisted men's uniforms included blue breeches or cal zones with buttons of brass._ The black Texcuco hat was wide bri mmed, turned up, and held by a loop on the left side to handle t he musket with ease. A black scarf or mascada negra de Barcelon a and a blue cloth cape or capa were also issued._

_______ Officers had a dress uniform consisting of a blue coat w ith scarlet collar, cuffs and lapels. The collar was edged wit h gold lace as was a buff or red waistcoat that was also worn. _ The coat was worn with blue knee breeches._ The hat was a gold -laced tricorn._ The undress uniform consisted of a flat black h at turned up and edged with gold lace._ Breeches were blue or bu ff and the coat was shorter than the dress coat._ Blue or red po nchos trimmed with gold lace were also permitted._ Weapons and e quipment were the same as those of enlisted men but were of bett er quality._

_______ Each presidio along the Spanish Frontier consisted o f a Caballaría or company of mounted soldiers._ The company norm ally consisted of a Captain or Capitán, a Lieutenant or Teniente , an Ensign or Alférez, a Chaplain or Capellán, one or two Serge ants or Sargentos, two Corporals or Cabos, some forty or so sold iers or soldados, and a number of Indian scouts._

_______ It would have been a very rare occurrence to ever se e a full presidial company in formation as the strength of a com pany was dispersed in small detachments on various assignments. _ In addition to garrisoning the presidio, soldados de cuera wer e detached to explore, to help establish new missions, to garris on existing missions as an escolta--escort or guard--to protec t missions from hostile Indians, protect supply caravans, carr y dispatches, and perform any number of other duties as assigne d to them by the provincial governors._ In response to a questio n about the number of duties assigned to presidial soldiers pose d by an inspecting_ Spanish official, one soldado responded, " I have more duties than the Devil has Fallen Angels!"_

_______ Soldados de cuera as individuals came from a variety o f backgrounds._ Many were mestizos, or mixed European and Indian ._ Some were mulato. Others were criollos, or Españoles born i n America, and some were peninsulares or gachupines or Spanish f rom the Iberian Peninsula._

_______ Presidial soldiers could advance themselves in a numbe r of ways._ They were paid a salary (which might not be collecte d for as many as five years at a time)._ They could be given lan d grants or advanced in the military based on their ability to r ead and write._ It is significant that in the Spanish military s ystem, presidial soldiers were by royal decree of equal status a s troops from Spain itself ._
___________________
The CUERA, shaped like a coat without sleeves, was made of seve n plies of white tanned deerskin. It provided protection agains t the arrows of the Indians except at very close range. The shie ld was heart-shaped, made of two plies of raw bullhide and carri ed on the left arm to turn away spears and arrows. The leather j ackets, while providing protection from arrows,_ had a serious d efect, they were not rainproof, and in a sudden rainstorm they s oaked up water like a sponge, multiplying the weight. They drie d slowly, and worse, became stiff._ It is fortunate that the sou thwest was a desert._

The_ weapons they used were supposed to be musket, pistol,_ swor d, and lance._ The musket and pistol were effective only in a ca valry charge against a massed enemy, which as far as is known ne ver happened here. Therefore, the lance and sword, and, a weapo n seldom mentioned, the bow and arrow, were the mainstays. The l ance_ was the primary offensive weapon and the soldados de cuer a were_ very skilled in_ its use._

_"The soldados de cuera were among the best horsemen in the worl d.^

^This would explain why the SERRANO descendants of Juan Francisc o Perez SERRANO were noted for their exceptional horsemanship, e ven the women! -Zeke Sena Inman.
