[94935] On the Miller Roll application of his son, William, Seth was reported to have been born on Oct 12, 1820 in Louisiana. He may have been part Melungeon, Cherokee or Shawnee through his mother Mary and his paternal grandmother Elizabeth Collins.
[94937] This Cemetery is located northwest of Mangus in Grant County, one mile south of the Fred McCauley Ranch. The Cemetery can be reached by going by the McCauley Ranch.
[94938] He and Benjamin Large were living very close to each other.
[94940] Seth and Mary moved to California because Mary's mother and father had moved there sometime earlier. He led a wagon train from Texas to California. He lived a short time in El Monte, then by 1861 at Willits and Ukiah. They settled next to the Benjamin Large Family. He stayed in California until at least 1870 and then was in New Mexico Territory before 1882. The dates are indicated by the places his children were born and census records.

[42575] It appears he first went to California as child with his Father's family in about 1850 and moved back and forth from California to the New Mexico Territory several times during his lifetime.
[42576] During territorial days New Mexico kept the brand records in three large ledger books. One book recorded the brands by date, another by name of applicant, and the third by brand. Until the 1960's the books were out on the counter in the brand registration office for public access, but somebody stole one and then they were locked up. Seth's application with his signature was clearly visible. The "T5" was on the right side. The significance of the brand is thought to be T for Toney and 5 for the number of children in the family at the time he registered the brand.
