[15035] He was a member of that fisrt House of Representatives. He also served in 1852, 1853 and 1855 when he was Speaker of the House.
[15036] The Conejos Grant, comprising 3,600 square miles (2.5 million acres), was located west of the Rio Grande in what is now northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Celedon had been a member of the group that was awarded a grant for the area dated February 8, 1833 under the name of Charles Hippolito Trotier de Beaubien. They were driven from the land by hostile Navajos so were thus unsuccessfully in their attempt to settle the area at that time. He now in 1842, however, was named as a principal on a new application along with Jose Maria Martinez, Antonio Martinez and Julian Gallegos. The names of his father Francisco Antonio and his brother Jose Maria also appear on the application. After the United States occupation of the region, a petition was made to the Civil Governor of New Mexico on October 5, 1846 asking for the U.S. to recognize the Conejos Grant, but it was rejected on November 2, 1846 on the basis that the Governor has no jurisdiction over the matter. In 1861 a claim was filed with the Surveyor General but to no avail. Again in 1900 a claim was filed by Celedon's son, Cresencio, with the Court of Private Land Claims but by now the documentation submitted had mysteriously disappeared into the legal system. The U.S. declined to act on the application. The bulk of the grant land passed into the Rio Grande National Forest and the remainder was put up for Homestead. Celedon did successfully file for 164 acres under the Homestead act and purchased other small parcels of the 2.5 million acres to which he was legitimately a part owner!
