Flower Girl, an oil painting of a nude with a bouquet of flowers

"Flower girl"

24 X 30 inches

oil on canvas

This painting was an art school exercise from a few years back, a figure study in lights and darks only, omitting all color. Only white and black oil paint was used, both pure and mixed into various shades of gray. The model is sitting in a chair behind a bouquet of flowers. Many Renaissance painters would begin a painting this way, adding color afterwards, and I thought about doing that as well. When I got this far, however, the painting reminded me of a lovely silver-toned black and white photograph, and I decided to leave it this way. ---T. B.
