Josue Espada walked on four straight balls to lead off the Vancouver half of the 1st inning, moved to second base on Jeff Ball's infield single off the glove of Knights third-baseman Dave Hollins, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Terrence Long's sacrifice fly to left as the Canadians took a 1-0 lead. Knights starter Pat Daneker did not have good control in the 1st inning (falling behind many batters) but escaped with only giving up a run. He would leave the game in the 4th inning due to control problems. In the 2nd inning, the Knights took the lead. Luis Raven doubled to left center field. Chad Mottola doubled off the right field fence. Raven's base-running mistake forced Raven to stay at third base instead of scoring. Jeff Leifer's RBI groundout to first base scored Raven to tie the game at 1-1. Mottola then scored on a fielder's choice to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. Esteban Beltre singled, moved to third on Mitch Simons' single to left and scored on Hollins' fielder's choice as the Knights extended their lead to 3-1 in the 3rd inning. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Canadians took the lead. Mike Neill RBI singled, Long recorded his second sacrifice fly RBI of the game to tie the game and Jose Ortiz ripped a double down the left field line as the Canadians led 4-3. Mottola solo-homered to lead off the 4th inning as the Knights tied the game at 4-4. The Canadians blew a good chance to regain the lead in the 4th inning - Adam Piatt stroked a bloop hit to center and Mario Encarnacion followed with another bloop single to center. Daneker was pulled from the game with runners on first and second and no outs. Daneker gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in the game. Reliever Mike Heathcott was able to retire the Canadians without allowing a run in the inning. In the 5th inning, Neill walked and scored on Long's triple to right field as the Canadians took a 5-4 lead. Kevin Jarvis started for the Canadians and struggled in the early innings but was able to get in a groove in the middle part of the game. Jarvis went 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs as he earned the victory. Jose Ortiz singled down the right field line to score Jeff Ball as the Canadians took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. In the 3rd inning, Charlotte got on the scoreboard as Jeff Leifer's sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1. In the 4th inning, Roberto Vaz solo-homered to right-center field as the Canadians quickly took back the lead at 2-1. In the 7th inning, the Canadians loaded the bases with 1 out against Knights starter Tanyon Sturtze. Jeff Ball RBI singled to right field to give the Canadians a 3-1 lead. Sturtze was removed from the game in favor of Bryan Ward. Mike Neill's fielder's choice groundout scored a run to make it 4-1. Terrance Long's RBI single up the middle made it 5-1. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Charlotte's Dave Hollins reached on an infield single, moved to third on Jeff Abbott's single to right, and scored on Luis Raven's sacrifice fly. With Abbott and Chad Mottola on base, Leifer doubled just inside the line in deep right field as the Knights trimmed the defecit to just a run at 5-4. Hollins RBI singled to right as the Knights tied the game at 5-5 in the 8th inning. In the 9th inning, Mattola walked, moved to third on a pickoff-at- first-base attempt where the ball got past the firstbaseman, and scored the game winning run as Eric Christopherson's infield chop was fielded by Vancouver's Ortiz and thrown wildly as Ortiz attempted to get Christopherson for the third out. The victory also signaled the Canadians last game at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver as they will be moving to Sacramento to play in a new $40 million dollar stadium in the Spring 2000. Canadians pitcher Mark Mulder was named MVP of the PCL Championship Series. Jeff Ball solo-homered and Jose Ortiz RBI singled as the Canadians built a 2-0 lead after 1 inning of play. Vancouver added another run in the 4th inning as catcher Danny Ardoin RBI singled to make it 3-0. In the 6th inning, Tom Evans doubled to the left-center-field wall as the Red Hawks got on the scoreboard. Vancouver held a 3-1 lead. In the 7th inning, Oklahoma's Jonathan Johnson threw a wild pitch as the Canadians scored to make it 4-1. Ortiz solo-homered in the 8th inning as Vancouver built a 5-1 lead. In the 9th inning, Pedro Valdes doubled to score Tom Evans to make it 5-2 Vancouver. Marc Sagmoen drove home Valdes later in the inning to make it 5-3. With the go-ahead run at the plate in the inning and 2 outs, Anthony Chavez was able to get Josue Espada to fly out to end the game. Oklahoma starter Brandon Knight took the loss, giving up 4 runs and 6 hits in 6 1/3 innings. Vancouver starter Gary Zito gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 5 2/3 inning as he got the win. Chavez got a save for his efforts in getting the crucial third out in the 9th inning. The winner of the PCL Finals will meet the winner of the International League finals in the 1999 AAA World Series in Las Vegas starting September 20th. Terrance Long and Jose Ortiz each belted two homers in the contest for Vancouver. Long and Ortiz drove in 3 runs each for the Canadians, while Jeff Ball, Danny Ardoin, and Eric Martins drove in a run each. Brian Richardson solo homered for the Buzz, while Jeff Ferguson drove in 3 runs and Brian Buchanan and Jeff Smith drove in two runs.
