TIME: 2:35

In the 2011 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game, Columbus Clippers (AAA Indians) last-minute starter Joe Martinez spotted the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) three 1st inning runs before settling down to toss the next six in scoreless fashion and his teammates provided him with eight unanswered runs. Both teams tallied for 11 runs in an impressively quick 2 hours 35 minutes as the Clippers won their second straight Triple-A National Championship by a final of 8-3.

Martinez got off to a rocky start. In the 1st inning, Irving Falu drew a one-out walk, David Lough singled to right field and Lorenzo Cain tripled them both home with a drive to the right-center field fence. Kila Ka'aihue struck out before John Whittleman singled into right field to drive in Cain.

Martinez found his groove in the top of the 2nd inning before his teammates started their eruption of run support in the bottom half of the frame. Chad Huffman singled to center with one out and went to second base on a wild pitch. Jerad Head walked and an out later, Luke Carlin launched a three-run homer into the right field berm to knot the game at 3-3.

Columbus took the lead in the 3rd inning. Tim Fedroff singled and went to third base on Travis Buck's single. Jared Goedert doubled to the left field fence to drive in Fedroff. Beau Mills followed with a single to left field to drive in Buck and Huffman grounded into a double play with Goedert scrampering home for a 6-3 Clippers lead.

Columbus added another run in the 4th inning. Juan Diaz singled into center field, went to second base on a wild pitch, tagged up and went to third base on Argenis Reyes' flyout to left field and scored on Fedroff's flare single into left field.

Mills solo homered to left field in the 8th inning for the final run of the game.

NOTES:
Columbus starter Joe Martinez was named the MVP of the contest with his 7 innings of 6-hit, 3-run ball. . . . Omaha losing pitcher Sean O'Sullivan allowed six runs and 6 hits in 3 innings. . . . Columbus is the first club to win back-to-back Triple-A National Championship titles since the Sacramento River Cats (AAA Athletics) of the PCL did the feat in 2007 and 2008. . . . The International League has a three-game Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game winning streak and all-time, the IL and PCL are tied at three championships apiece. . . . Even though the Isotopes were not representing the PCL on the field, the Albuquerque fans showed up in great numbers. The 9,569 attendance was the largest for this single-game playoff between the IL and PCL since 2007. The Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game has been around since 2006. . . . The Kansas City Royals announced at the completion of the game who will be called up from Omaha. The players are Lorenzo Cain, Kelvin Herrera, Sean O'Sullivan, Jarrod Dyson, Vin Mazzaro and Manny Pina. All but Mazzaro and Pina saw action in the title game. . . . The 2012 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game will be held at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Tampa Bay Rays' International League affiliate Durham Bulls. . . . The end of the game started the official offseason for minor league baseball. When play resumes on April 5, 2012, Omaha begins defense of their first-ever Pacific Coast League championship against the Isotopes in a four game series at Werner Park. Omaha's last championship prior to this year's PCL crown was a 1990 American Association Triple-A championship.

Isotopes Park Hosts Triple-A Championship Game on Tuesday evening

The Albuquerque Isotopes will host the 2011 Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game on Tuesday evening at Isotopes Park. It will be the first Triple-A championship game to not be hosted in Oklahoma City since the restarting of crowning an overall Triple-A champion began in 2006. Albuquerque will not be the new permanent home of the game as it will travel to various Triple-A cities in both the PCL and International League in the coming years. The International League is represented by the Columbus (OH) Clippers (AAA Indians). Columbus has won two straight IL Governor's Cup titles and won last year's Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game, defeating the PCL's Tacoma Rainiers (AAA Mariners) at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The PCL is represented by the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) who swept the PCL Championship Series in three games the team with the PCL's best record in 2011, the Sacramento River Cats (AAA Athletics). Due to the fact the IL won the Triple-A All-Star Game, Columbus is considered the "home" team. Omaha will not be sending 2011 PCL Pitcher of the Year and 2011 PCL Playoffs MVP starter Luis Mendoza to the mound as the Royals called up Mendoza. The Storm Chasers are expected to send RHP Sean O'Sullivan to the mound, while Columbus is expected to counter with RHP Mitch Talbot. The start time is 6:05PM MT and the game will be aired on VERSUS, will supposedly be streamed on MILB.TV (though not appearing in the MILB.TV schedule yet), and American troops around the world will get to enjoy the game as American Forces Network will pick up the VERSUS broadcast. The voice of the Isotopes, Robert Portnoy, will do the play- by-play and Bucky Dent will be the analyst. Pawtucket Red Sox (AAA Red Sox) broadcaster Steve Hyder will be the field reporter.
