Isotopes 2014 by the Stats - PCL regular season wrapups

Even though the Isotopes missed the PCL postseason, keep reading here for summaries of the Pacific Conference Championship, American Conference Championship, PCL Championship and the Triple-A National Championship Game in Charlotte, North Carolina. Both playoff series' open Wednesday evening with the Memphis Redbirds (AAA Cardinals) in Papillion, Nebraska (outside Omaha) to play the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) in the best-of-five American Conference Championship. The Reno Aces (AAA Diamondbacks) visit the Las Vegas 51s (AAA Mets) in the opener of the best-of-five Pacific Conference Championship.

The Joe Bauman Home Run Award winner finished his season in the PCL. Kris Bryant hit 22 homers with the Cubs' Double-A Tennessee Smokies then played the final 70 games of the season with the PCL's Iowa Cubs, homering 21 more times for a total of 43 homers to edge Joey Gallo who had 42 total minor league homers. Bryant will receive a check for $8,600 as part of the award - $200 for each homer hit.

There was a third member to join the PCL's 20/20 club in 2014 as Round Rock's Jared Hoying stole his 20th bag on Sunday to join the Isotopes' Joc Pederson and Fresno's Chris Dominguez.

The final PCL Players of the Week were both Reno Aces (AAA Diamondbacks) players. Mike Jacobs was the Hitter of the Week and hit .400 (12x26) with 5 homers and 11 RBI to help the Aces claim a division title. Charles Brewer was the Pitcher of the Week. Brewer made two starts and went 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA. In 14 innings, Brewer allowed two runs, walked 2 and struck out 12.

Brennan Boesch of the Salt Lake Bees (AAA Angels) was the PCL Batting Champion with a .332 average. Clint Robinson with his .312 average was 5th in the league. Nick Tropeano of the Oklahoma City Redhawks (AAA Astros) was the PCL Pitching champion with Jeff Bennett in 6th place with his 3.83 ERA.

Here are some stats for the 2014 Isotopes season:

62-80 Record, 3rd place in the Pacific Conference Southern Division,
18 Games back of the Las Vegas 51s (AAA Mets)

Isotopes had their earliest playoff elimination in franchise history - game
number 129

564,625 in 70 openings - 8,066 per gate - 6,926,080 total attendance in 12
seasons

The season mark was 3rd most in PCL for the seventh straight season; 8th most in all of
Triple-A; 9th most in all of Minor League Baseball. El Paso with their relocated
franchise and brand new ballpark that has received rave reviews and honors
gave Albuquerque a run for the season attendance figure but finished fourth in
the PCL behind Albuquerque

60 different players, including those who the Dodgers sent to
Albuquerque on rehabilitation assignments, were on the active
roster at one point in the season.

Joc Pederson was the first 30/30 man in the PCL since 1934.
That also means no Albuquerque Duke accomplished the feat
and Pederson was the first Isotope to do so. Pederson was
the first of three PCL players to reach the 20/20 mark, was
the first Isotope to do so, and the first Albuquerque Triple-A
player to reach 20/20 since the Dukes' Franklin Stubbs in 1985

Isotopes starter Zach Lee had a quality start, but without his team providing any run support for him, Lee took the loss and set a franchise record in Albuquerque's season-ending 5-0 shutout against the Las Vegas 51s (AAA Mets) at "The Lab" on Labor Day afternoon.

Matt Reynolds' sacrifice flyout in the 5th inning and Taylor Teagarden's solo homer in the 6th inning gave Las Vegas a 2-0 lead.

The 51s scored their final three runs of the regular season in the 9th inning on Cesar Puello's RBI single, a run scored on Jamie Romak's throwing error and Anthony Seratelli had a sacrifice flyout.

'TOPES NOTES:
There were many Isotopes transactions before the final game of the season. The Dodgers as part of September 1st roster expansion recalled IF Alex Guerrero, P Yimi Garcia and C Tim Federowicz. OF Joc Pederson had his contract purchased by the Dodgers while IF Carlos Triunfel was designated for assignment to free up 40-man roster room for Pederson. OF Joe Meggs was transferred to Albuquerque from rookie-level Ogden, IF Delvis Morales was activated from the Disabled List, and P Josh Ravin was placed on the temporary inactive list. . . . The Isotopes got three runners to third base in the game. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 5th inning when Roger Bernadina tripled with no outs but was stranded on third base. . . . Zach Lee's 13th loss established a new Isotopes franchise record for most losses in a season (Justin Wayne, 12 losses, 2003). Lee's quality start today was his 7th of the season. . . . The Isotopes drew 564,625 in 70 openings for a per-opening average of 8,066. It was the second lowest season attendance mark in the 12 seasons of Isotopes baseball, ekeing past the low attendance mark of 563,686. The attendance figure might have been at least 14,000 greater had the Isotopes not lost two home openings to weather. For home and away combined attendance, the Isotopes played in front of just under one million fans (999,557). . . . The Isotopes are 7-5 on Labor Day holidays, snapping a two-game winning streak with the loss today. . . . Albuquerque is also 7-5 in final games of the season and in the final home games of the season. . . . With Albuquerque's only September game in the books, here is how the Isotopes fared in September: 0-1 record (0-1 at home), .129 team batting average, 3.00 team ERA, 0 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and 0 homers. . . . Albuquerque has been shut out 12 times this season, tying the franchise record for most times been shutout in a season. . . . Albuquerque won the series against Las Vegas 3-1 and 40,894 attended for a per-game average of 10,224. It was the largest four-game series home attendance draw of the season. This season, Albuquerque won 10 of the 16 games in the season series with the 51s. All-time, Albuquerque leads the series 38-22 (19-9 at Isotopes Park and 19-13 in Las Vegas). . . . The final division race ended with the Reno Aces (AAA Diamondbacks) winning the Pacific Conference Northern Division with their extra innings victory over the Sacramento River Cats (AAA Athletics). The PCL postseason starts Wednesday with Memphis at Omaha and Reno at Las Vegas.

It was a wild and crazy game at "The Lab" on Sunday evening. Albuquerque committed five errors in the game, was down 8-0 in the 6th inning and then roared back, tying the game in the 8th and then again in the 9th inning and then worked out of a 11th inning jam before Roger Bernadina's walkoff sacrifice flyout gave the Isotopes a 12-11 victory in 11 innings over the division-leading Las Vegas 51s (AAA Mets). Albuquerque has won three straight games.

Andrew Brown singled home a run and Brandon Allen doubled home a run in the 1st inning as the 51s quickly lead 2-0.

The 51s added three more runs in the 2nd inning. Cesar Puello solo homered and Bobby Abreu and Brown each drew bases-loaded walks.

Las Vegas' Anthony Seratelli singled home a run in the 5th inning and in the 6th inning, Brown doubled home a run and Allen singled home a run as the 51s led 8-0.

Albuquerque's offense awoke from its slumber in the home half of the 6th inning. Trayvon Robinson infield singled before being erased from the basepaths when Joc Pederson reached on a fielder's choice. Tim Federowicz singled and Clint Robinson doubled to the left-center field wall to drive in Pederson. Jamie Romak singled home Robinson, Alex Guerrero singled home Clint Robinson and Mike Baxter doubled to drive in Romak. After Carlos Triunfel struck out swinging, pinch-hitter Johnny Monell doubled off the top of the right field wall to drive in Guerrero and Baxter.

The 51s plated two runs in the 8th inning, each on an error, to lead 10-6 before Albuqurque knotted the game at 10-10 in the home half of the inning. Guerrero solo homered to left field, Baxter followed with a double and scored on Triunfel's single. Pinch-hitter Griff Erickson followed with a two run homer.

Cory Vaughn mashed a homer to left field in the top of the 9th inning as the 51s appeared to put a dagger in the Isotopes momentum but Albuquerque fought in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game and send it to extras. With two outs, Baxter singled, went to second base on Triunfels's single and scored on pinch-hitter Walter Ibarra's single into right field.

Las Vegas mounted a serious threat to win the game in the top of the 11th inning. Pinch-hitter Taylor Teagarden drew a leadoff walk, Daniel Muno followed with a walk and Vaughn laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. Abreu was intentionally walked to load the bases before Isotopes reliever Red Patterson got Brown and Allen to strike out swinging to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Romak walked, Guerrero was hit by a pitch and Baxter sacrifice bunted to move both runners up a base. Triunfel was intentionally walked to load the bases, just like Albuquerque had done in the top half of the inning, but the Isotopes were able to break through when pinch-hitter Roger Bernadina sacrifice flied out to deep left field with Romak scoring the game winning run.

Isotopes Starter Line: Matt Magill 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 5.21 ERA

DODGERS PROSPECTS IN TODAY'S GAME:
Joc Pederson: CF - 0x5 (.303), 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, E (7)
Alex Guerrero: 2B - 2x5 (.329), 2 R, 1 HR (15), 2 RBI (49)
Matt Magill: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, WP, HBP, 5.21 ERA

'TOPES NOTES:
The 2014 Isotope team awards were handed out pre-game and the winners were Joc Pederson (MVP), Jeff Bennett (Pitcher of the Year), Trayvon Robinson (Defensive Player of the Year and Most Popular Player), Mike Baxter (Mr. Hustle), Jamie Romak (Power Hitter) and Red Patterson and Robert Carson shared the Most Community-Minded award. . . . After a spell of six games without a transaction, there were several of them on Sunday. The Dodgers optioned P Carlos Frias and IF Miguel Rojas to Albuquerque after P Hyun-Jin Ryu and IF Jose Uribe were activated from the big league disabled list. Considering Monday is the final Isotopes game, don't expect Frias and Rojas to physically report to the Isotopes but rather stay with the Dodgers and become activated again during September 1st roster expansions. P Jose Dominguez, on the Isotopes disabled list, was sent to rookie-level Ogden on a rehabilitation assignment. P Justin Germano was placed on the Isotopes' Disabled List with an ingrown toenail and P Josh Ravin came off the Isotopes' Disabled List. . . . The Isotopes passed the 550,000 attendance mark (555,447) with the 13,412 fans that attended Sunday evening. Albuquerque needs to draw 8,239 or more on Monday afternoon to avoid having the lowest home season attendance in the history of the franchise. The 13,412 was the 22nd largest regular season crowd in the history of Isotopes Park. . . . The Isotopes are 5-5 in extra inning contests this season. . . . The eight run comeback was Albuquerque's biggest comeback of the season. . . . The win was Albuquerque's first this season when committing five or more errors. Albuquerque won a game while committing five errors for the first time since 2012. . . . The victory guaranteed the Isotopes will not finish in last place in the Pacific Conference Southern Division. Albuquerque will finish the season with the third worst record in the PCL. . . . Albuquerque has five walkoff victories this season. . . . With August in the books, here are some August stats: 9-19 (5-9 at home, 4-10 on the road), .295 team batting average, 6.40 team ERA, 169 runs scored, 18 stolen bases and 39 homers. . . . Joc Pederson went hitless in five at-bats to snap an eight-game hitting streak. . . . . Griff Erickson had the 3rd Isotope pinch-hit homer this season and 21st in Isotopes franchise history. . . . On Albuquerque's off-day Saturday, the Memphis Redbirds (AAA Cardinals) became the second PCL club to clinch a division title when they took the American Conference Southern Division. The Nashville Sounds (AAA Brewers) were eliminated to make Memphis the champion. On Sunday evening, the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA Royals) clinched the American Conference Northern Division with the Oklahoma City Redhawks (AAA Astros) eliminated. That leaves the Pacific Conference Northern Division yet to be decided with just one game left in the season. The Reno Aces (AAA Diamondbacks) lead the Sacramento River Cats (AAA Athletics) by one game. . . . The Isotopes look to end their record-breaking defeats season Monday afternoon with a series sweep. Probables in the season finale are RHP Zach Lee (7-12, 5.54) for the Isotopes and RHP Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 4.67) for the 51s.
