Memphis won the best-of-five series 3-2 and moves on to the PCL Championship Series. The Dukes, meanwhile, move to Portland, Oregon next season while the city of Albuquerque awaits its baseball future. Luis Garcia three-run homered as Memphis built a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning. The Dukes got on the board in the 3rd inning as Curtis Pride RBI singled. In the 4th inning, the Dukes tacked on two more runs to tie the game at 3-3. Geronimo Gil two-run homered. Memphis got three more runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th inning. Garcia sacrifice flied out and Stubby Clapp two-run doubled. Curtis Pride solo-homered in the 8th inning as Albuquerque trimmed the defecit to two runs at 6-4. Memphis had a big 6-run 8th inning to break the game wide open at 12-4. Garcia walked with the bases loaded, Clapp three-run homered, Rick Heiserman grounded out to score a run, and Mark Little RBI doubled in the inning. Albuquerque scored the final two runs in franchise history in the 9th inning as Dante Powell two-run homered. The best-of-five series is tied at 2-2 with the decisive game to be played on Sunday afternoon to determine who moves on to the PCL Championship Series. Albuquerque got on the board quickly as Curtis Pride solo-homered to lead off the game. Memphis tied the game in the bottom of the 1st inning. Mark Little scored as Albert Pujols grounded into a double play. Albuquerque re-gained the lead in the 3rd inning. Pride tripled and scored on Hiram Bocachica's single. Memphis tied the game in the 4th inning. Keith McDonald singled to score Lou Lucca, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Albuquerque once again took the lead in the 7th inning as Tony Mota was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Memphis used bottom-of-the-9th-inning heroics to win the game. Larry Sutton singled to right with two outs and the bases loaded to score Pujols with the game-tying run and Lucca with the game-winning run. Dukes reliever Chad Ricketts has lost both Dukes games in the playoffs. Tony Mota got things started for the Dukes with a solo homer in the 1st inning. Memphis came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the 2nd inning. Luis Garcia hit a comebacker to Eric Gagne; Gagne stopped the ball and by the time the ball was picked up and thrown to first base, Garcia was safe and Darrell Whitmore scored. Albuquerque scored three times in the 6th inning to make it 4-1. Mota's single through a drawn-in infield scored Curtis Pride to break the tie. Kevin Grijak followed with a two-run homer. The Redbirds scored a run in the 8th inning to make it 4-2 as Lou Lucca drove in a run. The Dukes scored their last run in the 8th inning as Adam Riggs sacrifice flied out, scoring Mota. Memphis holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Memphis went ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Tony Mota's two-run hit in the second inning tied up the game. The Dukes went ahead in the 5th inning as Dante Powell drove in a run. The Dukes extended their lead to 4-2 in the 6th inning as Angel Pena solo homered. Memphis scored four times in the 7th inning to re-gain the lead. Andy Bevins two-run doubled to tie the game. The Redbirds went ahead on Keith McDonald's RBI single and Larry Sutton added a sacrifice fly. The Redbirds scored five more times in the 8th inning, taking advantage of three Dukes errors in the inning. McDonald drove in another run and Luis Garcia two-run singled to highlight the scoring. Tuesday September 5, 2000 The Dukes are off before beginning their playoff series. In 1994, they beat Colorado Springs 3 games to 1 in the semifinals and beat Vancouver 3 games to 2 in the Championship series. Hopefully the trend will continue this season. Last year's PCL Champions, the Vancouver Canadians, moved to Sacramento in 2000. It would be a great end to the Dukes franchise if they won the Championship before moving to Portland, Oregon. Albuquerque took three out of the four games in the last series. Tony Mota solo-homered in the 1st inning as the Dukes built a 1-0 lead. In the 3rd inning, the Dukes added four more runs to make it 5-0. Curtis Pride doubled and scored on Mota's single. Chris Ashby's RBI single scored Mota. Geronimo Gil doubled to score Ashby and Adam Riggs. The Dukes extended the lead to 9-0 in the 4th inning. Kevin Grijak tripled with the bases loaded and scored on Ashby's groundout. Jim Deschaine two-run homered in the 5th inning to get Iowa on the scoreboard. Mota hit his second solo-homer of the game in the 6th inning as Albuquerque took a 10-2 lead. With Chris Michalak pitching in relief, the Cubs scored three times. Mike Stoner two-run singled and Julio Zuleta RBI doubled. Iowa added another run in the 8th inning to make it a 10-6 Dukes lead. Mark Dalesandro RBI singled. In the 9th inning, Pedro Feliciano, recently promoted from AA San Antonio, made his Dukes debut. With a four run lead, he allowed the Cubs to almost tie the game. He gave up a leadoff homer to Zuleta, a solo homer to Cole Liniak, and a RBI single to Chad Meyers. With the bases loaded, he got Tarrik Brock to strike out to end the game. Sunday September 3, 2000 In Dukes news, OF Dante Powell, IF Mike Berry and P Pedro Feliciano have been promoted from AA San Antonio, while SS Jorge Nunez has been promoted from A Vero Beach. Albuquerque holds a 2-1 series advantage and snapped a two-game winning streak with the defeat. It was only the second time all year that the Dukes were shutout (the first coming July 18th at the Sports Stadium when Memphis blanked the Dukes 1-0). Norton went the distance, giving up just 2 hits, walking 5 and striking out 6. Julio Zuleta and Tarrik Brock each drove in two runs, while Augie Ojeda and Mark Dalesandro contributed a run each in the winning effort. Grijak two-run singled, RBI singled, and solo-homered in the game. Gil RBI doubled and RBI singled in the game, while Adam Riggs homered and drove in three and Angel Pena and Eric Gagne contributed an RBI each. Friday September 1, 2000 The Dodgers have activated IF Chris Donnels from his rehabilitation assignment in Albuquerque and promoted C Paul LoDuca and P Onan Masaoka. From AA San Antonio, P Luke Prokopec was promoted. I expect more Dukes callups once the season finishes. Orlando Miller drove in two runs on the evening for the Dukes. Tarrik Brock and Mike Mahoney each drove in two runs for the Cubs, Augie Ojeda, Mike Stone, and Julio Zuleta drove in a run each. Craig Wilson two-run homered in the 4th inning to give the Sounds a 2-0 lead. In the 6th inning, the Sounds extended the lead to 4-0. Wilson RBI doubled and he later scored on an error. Albuquerque's Orlando Miller two-run homered in the 7th inning to cut the defecit to two runs at 4-2. Chris Ashby drove in a run in the 8th inning as the Dukes edged closer at 4-3 but Dave Pavlas took care of the Dukes from that point to earn the save. Wednesday August 30, 2000 In Dukes news, Orlando Miller has joined the team. It appears he will play shortstop in place of Shawn Gilbert who is preparing to leave any day now for Australia to represent the U.S. in the Olympics. The Dukes are winners of four straight games. Albuquerque got on the scoreboard quickly as Chris Prieto solo-homered. The Golden Spikes tied up the game on Dee Brown's RBI double in the bottom of the first. Shawn Gilbert's two-run homer put the Dukes up 3-1 in the 2nd inning. In the 3rd inning, Joe Dillon drove in a run with a single to cut the Golden Spikes defecit to a run at 3-2. In the 4th, 7th, and 9th innings, the Dukes got single runs to close out the scoring. Chris Donnels now leads the PCL in RBI at the All-Star break with 78 and is tied for the home run lead in the PCL with 26. . . . Albuquerque holds a 4 1/2 game lead over Colorado Springs in the PCL Central Division. The Dukes have won three straight games. Chris Donnels doubled in Chris Prieto in the 1st inning as Albuquerque took a 1-0 lead. The next five Dukes runs came on solo-homers. In the 2nd inning, it was Adam Riggs going deep. In the 4th inning, Dante Powell homered. In the 5th inning, Chris Donnels homered and in the 6th inning, Hiram Bocachica and Chris Donnels back-to-back homered. Donnels now is tied for the PCL lead in homers with 26. The Dukes have won two straight games. Omaha starter Jamie Walker gave up four homers in the game, good for the league lead in homers given up (23). In the 2nd inning, Angel Pena solo-homered as the Dukes took a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning, Chris Ashby and Angel Pena each solo- homered as the Dukes built a 3-0 lead. Omaha tied up the game in the bottom of the 4th inning. Dee Brown doubled to score Ray Holbert. Joe Dillon and Aaron Guiel added RBI singles in the inning. In the 6th inning, Hiram Bocachica singled to lead off the inning and later scored on Chris Ashby's single as the Dukes regained the lead at 4-3. In the 7th inning, Dante Powell solo-homered as the Dukes extended their lead to 5-3 and the Dukes closed out the scoring by putting six runs on the board in the 9th inning. In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Dukes got five runs of their own on doubles. Tony Mota, Jeff Branson, Chris Prieto, Hiram Bocachica and Paul LoDuca all doubled to drive in a run in the inning. In the 4th inning, the Dukes scored four times - three of those runs coming on an Adam Riggs three-run homer. Las Vegas scored three times of their own in the bottom of the 4th inning to make it 5-4 Albuquerque. Las Vegas took the lead in the 6th inning by scoring twice and extended the lead with Joe Vitiello's solo-homer in the 7th inning. Albuquerque scored three times in the 8th inning to regain the lead at 8-7. Two of those runs came on Chris Donnel's team-leading 20th homer of the season. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Nathan Tebbs solo homered as the Stars tied the game at 8-8. Jeff Branson two-run doubled in the top of the 9th inning to give the Dukes the eventual game-winning run. Albuquerque snapped a two-game winning streak with the loss. The Stars won the game in the 8th inning - John Curl's soft grounder was mishandled by Dukes second baseman Hiram Bocachica and Ryan Radmanovich scored on the play. Hiram Bocachica was the hero for the Dukes, belting two homers - a solo shot in the 1st inning and a three-run homer to highlight a five-run Dukes 5th inning. Mike Figga sacrifice flied out in the 2nd inning and Mike Metcalfe RBI doubled in the 5th inning to give Eric Gagne the only runs he would need. The Dukes snapped a two game winning streak, but still retain the PCL Central Division lead over the Sky Sox by 1/2 game. Each team won two games in the series. Scott McClain drove in four runs for the Sky Sox, while Aaron Small drove in three runs. Ben Petrick and Angel Echevarria each drove in two runs and Juan Sosa and Phil Hiatt drove in a run each. Some of McClain's runs came on his 20th homer of the season and his third homer of the series. For the Dukes, Chris Donnels, Kevin Grijak, Chris Ashby, Jeff Branson, and Mike Figga drove in a run each. Petrick had five hits in the game, good enough to extend his PCL hitting streak to 23 games.
