The World Wide Web is the buzzword of the day. For those of you that
have not seen it, my advice to you is to come and take a peek. It is
changing the way the world communicates. For those of you who think it is
a fad or nothing to be concerned about, I advise you to call around to
telephone companies around the country and ask them if they think it is a
fad. They are about to embark on a restructuring of their technology, at
the cost of millions of dollars. What they are doing is working on direct
access to the Internet. Instead of using 9600 baud or 14,400 or even the
new 28,800 which is as fast as is currently available, they will be able
to offer speeds up to 128,000 and faster. This will make the Internet
and online services so accessible that communication as we know it will
be a thing of the past. The incredible thing is this technology is
coming so fast that I predict we will see it replace modem access to the
Internet in some cities before the end of 1996, and by the turn of the
century it will be the mainstay of communication.
A year or so ago the Internet was opened up to be used by business.
Prior to that it had been a research tool for scientists who needed to
network with different libraries and databases. In the last year it has
been estimated that 100,000 new users per month have gotten online access.
As a salesperson, if you just take a small tour of the Internet regarding
real estate information you will stand up and take notice. There is so
much information and networking on the Internet for real estate, that if
you are not online soon, you will be in a situation not unlike trying
today to sell property without any mls system. All of this is reminiscent
of when mls computers first came out. Look back in history books to
telephones, automobiles, airplanes etc. Computers are the most important
technological change in the history of mankind. The scary thing is IBM
created their first PC in 1981, just think of how far we have advanced
since then. It says to me that 10 years from now we will have technology
that we can only dream about today. If you are one who is not at all
interested in all of this, I respect you. To each his own. However, for
those of you that are, I share your enthusiasm. It is a wonderful time
to be alive and I live everyday with an excitement and furor for new
technology that leaves me breathless.
I have been approved by the Real Estate Commission to teach a new
class I have written. This new class is a Windows based class, and will
include Altaira and other state of the art programs. I will start
teaching this class the beginning of next year. The class will also
include a tour of the Internet and The World Wide Web. For those of you
who are impatient, I have been consulting with a number of people in
Albuquerque, helping them get on the Net. I am not one of those that
charges an exorbitant amount to set up your page. My approach is to help
you to learn and understand how to do it yourself because it is an
ongoing process, and these pages need constant maintainance. The only
way for it to be productive for you is to learn the process yourself.
With some of the digital camera technology coming down in price
and the ease of using pictures straight out of Altaira, the color
graphics on the Web can easily show your listed homes to the 30,000,000
people that are presently estimated to be on line. With all the
thousands of dollars every month that we spend to advertise our listings
in the newspapers and magazines, it seems to me that a tool that gives
this much exposure to such a wide market is truly exciting. Of course
the proof is in the fact that thousands of offices are getting on line
all over the country. I advise you to call me and lets get you up and
running. The WWW is the state of the art, and it is only available to
you if you take the time to learn how to use it. With my help, Web
Publishing won't be nearly as difficult as it seems.
