Charles Messier originally designed his catalog as a tool for comet hunters, as a list of objects that might be mistaken for comets. Thus the objects in his catalog were intended to be avoided.
Ironically, modern astronomers actually seek out the objects in the catalog because of their beauty. The SEDS site (among others) has pictures of all the Messier objects: http://www.seds.org/messier/
