Altazimuth is used on less expensive scopes that don't need a clock drive (like Dobsonians). Equatorial is best when clock drives are used, and to make the alignment setup process fast. A third type which is becoming prominent unites a computer with an altazimuth mount. The computer can still find objects in the sky, provided it's properly calibrated. But it may not be able to track well enough for photography.
