Because they yield the best aperture per buck, Dobsonians are great for deep-field, dim objects. They are
sometimes called "light buckets" because they are frequently very large.
If you don't need to do photography and don't need a clock drive, a Dobsonian makes a fantastic amateur
scope which is surprisingly portable. If you do want a clock drive, get a Newtonian on an equatorial
mount. Just be aware that they're not very portable.
