Remember that planets move and don't have fixed coordinates. If you look for planets using setting circles, you'll need to look up the planet's coordinate for a particular date and time.
Scopes with computers can frequently find planets automatically, provided they are set up properly. For planets that are visible with the naked eye, it's usually easier to just manually point the scope at them.
