History of Changes

Changes Biography With Discography

Changes was a folk band in it’s early days which did not at all fit into the folk genre of that period. It wasn’t until nearly three decades later that it was to find it’s true genre in what today is termed Apocalyptic folk, or Folk-Noir. In this sense Changes is considered by many to be the seminal band of what later became this genre.

Changes, meaning essentially, Robert N. Taylor and Nicholas Tesluk, began playing music in 1969. During this period the band played in small coffee houses, college and university campuses and night clubs. The band continued until 1973, and at that time the band took a sabbatical. It was reactivated and reformed in 1974, first adding to it’s line-up Karen Taylor and a short while later Carol DePugh. This second incarnation of the band continued for several years coming to an end in 1977, when Nicholas relocated to another area. During this period Nicholas became part of Phase II, a musical project that lasted for a number of years. During this period Taylor as well as Tesluk continued to compose lyrics and songs with no great expectation of reviving the group. It seemed like our musical career had for all practical purposes ended without any real intention of reviving the band. Then in 1994 Michael Moynihan of Storm Productions heard some of the old demo and practice tapes the group had made. Michael decided he wanted to release material from these tapes on an album. These reel to reel analog tapes were digitally re-mastered and the result was the release on Storm/Cthulhu label Changes’ Fire of Life.

The release of Fire Of Life effectively ushered in Changes third, and present incarnation. The reviews and sales were good on this first release prompting the band to return to the studio for an encore production. The result of this recording session was Changes second album Legends (released in 1998) and Orphan In the Storm released November of 2004 by Hau Ruck! as both a CD and LP. Fire Of Life was also reissued by Hau Ruck! in 2002 as both a CD and LP. To date these efforts represent only a fraction of the large body of music that was composed by the band. Also many new compositions have been written which will be included on future albums.
