The ill-fated Colorado and Southern narrow gauge line abandoned regular passenger traffic in 1926, after which it ran only occasional excursion trains in the summer and a combine in mixed trains three times weekly. This dropped to twice weekly in the 1930s, and finally halted entirely in the dark days -- for the world and for the Colorado narrow gauges -- of 1940. Obviously, this photo was taken on one of days the management would have used as justification for abandonment: what revenue would come from one lightly loaded gondola of freight and a combine?
