SAPAWE PUEBLO
Chama Valley of New Mexico
(You are looking straight down from the aircraft at the buried
town)

Use the trees and road at the bottom of this photo to get
an idea of scale, of the great size of this buried prehistoric
pueblo in the Chama Valley of north-central New Mexico.
Although grass, brush, and tress grow all around the mounds of
the buried town, no vegetation grows over the walls and roomblocks
themselves, creating a strong visual contrast and making the layout
of the town obvious to the aerial observer.
Note in the center of the plaza, in lower left center of the photo,
the faint round trace of the kiva, the town's semi-subterranean
ceremonial chamber.
